Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 Diesel in a petrol car isn't usually catastrophic, normally the worst case scenario is everything needing a good clean. All depends on how long it was run like that I guess. The problems can come when it's a bit of diesel mixed in with enough petrol to actually let the engine run (briefly), until it's either too diluted to ignite, or individual parts like injectors gum up with the heavy oil. If this was just a simple part of the history of a car with no running issues after, I wouldn't be overly worried. But as we don't know the full story here, and it has got problems now, I'd be factoring in the worst case in any offer I'd make, and that'd include the likes of injectors, and potentially the fuel pump might have been damaged in the process etc. Quote
Andy - a15cro Posted February 9, 2021 Author Posted February 9, 2021 Ok so as to try and quantify the reply’s to date. a) the current owner is a mechanic with a garage, sales and hire business, so has said it’s going to be a relatively cheap fix for him even if he throws another motor in, however he’s got lots of projects and possibly does not have time for this one. b) I believe the previous owner (there is a three by Angliawestie) must have cranked it an awful lot when trying to establish the issue of it not starting I.e diesel! c) I’m the same with negotiation, I sell too cheap and usually buy asking price or more! 😖 d) anyone want to but a Kingfisher Blue 270bhp Audi TT Quattro to help fund the repatriation! 😉 Quote

I'd take a punt, major on possible engine damage and offer him as little as possible. I've seen a few miss fuelling episodes over the years, having run large LGV and car fleets for years. TBH I've never seen an engine failure on a petrol filled with derv (the other way round gets expensive 🤦♂️). They do misfire and so sounds catastrophic but normally its one or more gunked up spark plug and/or the injectors. Being a 2001 I'm assuming it hasn't got a catalytic converter? Could have been worse, years ago I had a senior manager decide to run his brand new Jag on his home brewed "bio diesel" (or chip fat as it turned out!). Didn't end well for the car or his job! 🤣 1 Quote

Andy - a15cro Posted February 22, 2021 Author Posted February 22, 2021 More Comms today, the guy has officially told me its up for sale - however he's wanting £9k as it stands or £12k repaired Since I only took £9k for it running I just can't go there, I think at £8k its still a decent offer, however he has a WhatsApp group 'advising' on value. I think it may be slipping out of my grasp, am I being too melancholy, I seem to be having an internal turmoil. Quote
