Chris_G Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 Hi all you westy owning IT gurus! My Norton anti-virus subscription is up for renewal at a shade under £14 for 12 months. My question is, is there a 'Free' program that is just as good or better? I've had a look around www.download.com and a program called 'Avast 4 Home Edition' seems to be well thought of, does anyone have any personal experiences with it or others? As I understand things, with the amount of people using things like online banking etc, the banks and financially vulnerable institutes are funding people like Avast to come up with good products. What are your thoughts? Chris Quote
adhawkins Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 I was using AVG for a while, but decided it was safer to pay for one. Currently, one of our machines has Panda on it, the other McAfee. When the 12 months free Panda license runs out, I think I'll buy McAfee to put on that machine too. For the sake of 20 or so quid a year, I think it's worth paying for one. Andy Quote
Mark Stanton Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 renewal at a shade under £14 for 12 months Which is a far cheaper safety net ............... than when your system gets nailed by a virus Quote
Chris_G Posted January 30, 2004 Author Posted January 30, 2004 TANSTAFFL ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Sorry am I being thick? Which is a far cheaper safety net ............... than when your system gets nailed by a virus Agreed, hence my asking the question, but as I was told I'm being made redundant this week, every penny counts! adhawkins Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 It's actually slightly wrong. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Andy Quote
Richgm Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 Just faced the same sort of dilema with norton internet security. My virus + update subscription ran out. RRP for the new 2004 version £54.99 Symantec price for upgrade £34.99 Subscrition renewal £20.73 Norton internet security 2004 off e-bay (oem version) £20 with free postage. So you can guess which one I went for Rich Quote
adhawkins Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 An annual subscription to McAfee virus scan is US$ 34.95. That gets you free software upgrades and virus definitions for the year. Well worth it if you ask me. Andy Quote
neilwillis Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 Yep, I've used McAffee for years, it works, and it's not too expensive. I did have a dose of flu a couple of weeks back mind Quote
Pinto Boy Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 When I checked my mail today I got a mail with the NoVarg virus attached, but Norton detected it and quarantined (sp?) it automatically. Chris, sorry to hear you've been made redundant. I guess you'll be spending lots of time on the Net looking for jobs so internet security is a must. Quote
mb893 Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 Aladdin eSafe... It's slightly psychotic but does a good job. Think they do a free/trial type version. Aladdin John Quote
Fat Albert Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 It's actually slightly wrong. Why didn't my spell checker pick that up Quote
Stuart Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 I was using AVG for a while, but decided it was safer to pay for one. So why is AVG inadequate, then? I've been using it for a good while now and never had a problem. I have had the mydoom/novarg thing lots of times on my work PC, which uses Outlook as the e-mail software, but it ain't appeared on my home machine, which doesn't. Am I being naive in thinking that virsuses spread mainly by Outlook so not using outlook with AVG is OK? Quote
adhawkins Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 The only thing with a free virus checker is the speed of updates etc. I think it took them several days to get a fix out for one of the big viruses once, and I decided it just wasn't worth the risk. Andy Quote
westyfield Posted January 30, 2004 Posted January 30, 2004 HELP.. My pc came with a bundle of software including Norton about 3 yrs ago and I've just bought the latest hard version to install rather than buy the download. Problem is I need to uninstall the old version first and there isn't an "uninstall" programme as I can see. I'm not really into these pc things but can someone tell me how to uninstall the old version from my pc so I can get up to date. Thanks in anticipation Quote
