Before striking out on their own, The Band were the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins, and then Bob Dylan.

The best rock film-documentary ever is the Scorcese directed film of The Band's farewell concert before they split, The Last Waltz. At the start of the film, the credits come up simply saying 'PLAY THIS FILM LOUD'!

The film opens with the encore, but the actual concert started at 9pm and finished after 2am, with an encore and two jam sessions. The special guest artists list is legendary, as are the backstage stories which include sugar bowls of cocaine. The DVD-CD box set that I have has so much more of the evening that made it to the doco.

Song is mostly in 3/4 time signature, which is waltz, but not the last waltz or the first!
