Mike Williams - Show and Events Co-ordinator Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 My partner is about to renew her driving licence (70+) and has seen that, by applying online, she will lose C1 and D1 categories including 'vehicles 3.5 - 7.5 tons (and traliers)'. Will she still be able to drive a normal sized car with trailer (category BE)? Quote
jeff oakley Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Not sure on the towing a trailer but why not just apply by post and keep a copy of what you she had before. A lot of bikers found they lost their bike entitlement when changing due to ineptitude by DVLA Quote
Mike Williams - Show and Events Co-ordinator Posted August 25, 2020 Author Posted August 25, 2020 Jane here and thanks. I have tried unsuccessfully to contact DVLA but number given is unobtainable, emails not attended and chat bot useless! I am just trying to go down the easy route by applying online! l will probably have to go the snail mail route instead as suggested Quote
mikef Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 I renewed mine at 70 on line and still had the BE category on the new one. Unless you actually took a test for the C1/D1 category, you will lose that on reaching 70 since you only had it under "grandfather" rights when the C1/D1 was implemented in 1997. In other words, if you already had a driving licence before 1997, you could still carry on driving a vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes without having to take the test. Quote
