Howsafe Workwear and Safety Equipment Posted August 13, 2020 Share Posted August 13, 2020 Hi all Looking at organising a trip down South - first stop at Cheddar and them maybe down to the South coast Dorset, Weymouth, then maybe over to Beaulieu Driving holiday and only over three nights Any good ideas for coll places to stop (overnight or part of the journey for quick pitstop or walk around) Might have a look at Stonehenge? Obviously the Beaulieu Motor Museum is worth the trouble but beware of the donkeys around town, there’s sometimes donkey jams on the roads. 😄. Both are close to Meridien Modena, the Ferrari/Maserati garage in Lyndhurst. Through Dorset, Sherborne is a nice town and just outside, at Milborne Port, is a great restaurant called the Clockspire. Then on the coast, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are picturesque and geologically interesting. Plenty of pretty villages in Dorset also, such as Milton Abbas, designed by Capability Brown. You could see the Giant on your way through also. If you go to Weymouth, you could see Chesil Beach. It's where they made the Chesil Speedster until Westfield bought it a year or so back. Alan Cutler (Adge) - Dorset AO Posted August 13, 2020 Share Posted August 13, 2020 Random thoughts: Cheddar can be busy to say the least! There’s a nice circular walk around the gorge which tends to be less busy, strenuous but good views. Heading south from Cheddar, couple of places to consider, Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford, and just to the west, the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton. Nice route to the south to the coast from Crewekerne to Bridport (and West Bay) on the A3066, including Beaminster tunnel. The Crown Inn at Bridport (our monthly meet venue) is always welcoming, and does good “pub grub”. B3157 from Bridport to Weymouth via Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury is a pleasant road with nice elevated views of the channel. If you’re going to Weymouth, personally think the Isle of Portland is worth a look. Nice walks and good views particularly looking north west along Chesil beach. As said, New Forest is picturesque, beware the widespread 40mph speed limit. Turfcutters Arms at East Boldre is a nice pub, good food and beer with accommodation, close to Beaulieu. Stayed there several times in our motorhome. Enjoy your break. Yes you can see the Stones and for my money unless you really want to stand and study them it is a better view from there as you get the scale. Cheddar Gorge is a bit of a journey unless you take in Bristol or Bath to be honest and not that spectacular to be honest. Bath is beautiful for a day out and many lovely places to eat there. All the other advice is good and around the New Forest is so many great places to see. Bucklers Hard is great to see as is Limington. Between Weymouth and Swanage there are some excellent beaches - although likely to be very busy.
