Oliver1
I live in Brighton and went for a walk along there as it is now pedestrianised temporarily. You still have to keep your eye out for cars as some are still given access, so it doesn’t really work. I go to the Speed trials and would like to see it continue. jeff oakley
Am I being dim here. That link is about reopening the drive to normal traffic to help after Covid. Is there a plan to stop the sprint again as the one in 2014 was voted out by the council
Man On The Clapham Omnibus
The closure is nominally temporary, but there's a strong undercurrent of objection to any motor traffic ever being allowed back on the Madeira Drive, and that could very well spell the demise of both the traditional Veteran Car end point, and the Speed Trials. An attempt was made to ban it after the unfortunate fatal accident in 2012 (year from memory) during the Green Party's stewardship, but that was overwhelmingly opposed by petition. This time the proposal is less overtly anti-Speed Trials and so the event could be an incidental casualty. I've been going most years since the late fifties (with my parents at first) and regard it as a major British event that could have been made far more significant than it is by an imaginative council. A sort of Monaco in Sussex. I love Brighton and fondly remember the days when it was clean and elegant with its white helmeted police constables, wonderful restaurants, and smart hotels. Now it's a dog crap smeared, cycle-on-pavement, drop-out centre with unconscious drug users asleep in doorways. Don't even think about walking down Duke's Mound pathways at any time either. Sorry Oliver1, but it has really gone thoroughly to pot. My late father had close family connections to the town, and he would be horrified. jeff oakley
Thanks for that MOTCO. I agree with your views on how it has got worse not better. The local people voted for the greens no doubt aided by the huge student population there and some of the ideas they appear to have had are why things have gone down hill

Oliver1
I can’t argue with comments regarding Brighton city centre. It has a lot to offer but could certainly do with a good jetwash!
pistonbroke
Sad to here about this , not how I imagined it to be , but I do think Brighton is not alone , seems to me most towns / city centers are suffering the same neglect toa more or less amount . Over the last few years I have spent time travelling throughout Dutchland , both towns and cities where there is no such litter problem as we have here . I think the big difference is in public attitude . Dutch teach there kids not to litter aided by the by laws being rigorously applied . I go to a place called Vlissingen in Holland quite a lot and I have noticed that there's a lot of dog mess on the pavement and on the grass verges etc. When I asked the answer was that "they" had increased tax to clear up dog mess, so the people who were mostly poop scooping simply stopped because now they are paying for it to be done for them... and of course judging by the amount of "organic fly traps" I see, it isn't being done. Which I guess tells it's own story...

Man On The Clapham Omnibus
I've always liked Holland (not allowed to call it that any more - it's officially 'Netherlands' only now apparently). Many business trips during the 1980s and the people both in business and the people in the street were always friendly and helpful. I went for an interview for a job in Bergen-op-Zoom in 1974 but as our first child was expected imminently and I'd had a good offer in UK too, I didn't take up the Dutch one. It was supposed to have been a UK based post for General Electric Plastics in Cheshire, but the business evolved during the interview process in Bergen-op-Zoom and it was obviously a European based post in their view. Looking back there are many reasons why I regret not taking it as our children would have been both born there and had dual nationality. Of all the European countries I have had business dealings in, Holland is the one I'd most like my children to grow up in - after Britain obviously! Mighty Mart
Just seen on the Lotus Seven forum that the Council upheld the decision to keep the area closed to speed trials etc night before last!!!!! Petition still open.... Mart.
Man On The Clapham Omnibus
Yet on the Brighton and Hove Motor Club site nothing was said earlier, and the council website says the consultation goes on until October. and elbow seems to be the situation. What ever happens it won't happen in 2020 that's for sure.
