I have been looking at either a purpose built electric bike or converting my Marin mountain bike. Keeping both options open. But there is an appeal to the bafang 1000 w motor that will do 1600 w peak with a 52v battery !!

I started to look at converting my Mountain bike to electric... at the time I was committing 2-3 days by road bike and thought if I could E bike the other days my car could rest more.  I even bought all I needed from China taking weeeeeeks to arrive.   In the mean time I powder coated the frame and decided my old bike looked to good.. and rim brakes where not ideal... looked for something similar and found that actually the old bike was worth quite good money for its retro value. For similar quality and discs I was looking at quite a spend with the e parts I’d bought.   UK law is a bit of a bum and as I’d gone 1000w I decided a home brew bike was likely to draw more attention to itself than a built one.    There are a number of people building e  bikes from Halfords bikes which look ok on eBay..   quickly as these things escalate I was looking at far more expensive bikes.. I found I could get something with a performance Bosch drive for £1500, the same as a lot of 3k plus bikes use.

I justified the spend by telling the wife it would be good for her commute too.. anyway she loves it!!  And I’ve hardly ridden it.  The 15.5 mph top assisted speed is a bit pants but it can be tuned!!!!.  Combined leg and battery I’ve done 28 on the flat.    

I’ve just got fitter And lighter And commute 50miles a day on my road bike...
