Anyone fitted or tried the Bafang mid drive kit ? I keep coming back and looking at the bbshd version. The 1000 w motor. Strictly off road mountain biking.

Thoughts please

I tried the 350W Bafang mid-drive kit. I ended up going with a hub motor instead, as that felt more natural to me - I found the mid-drive a little slow to ease off the assistance when changing gears, so they were given a bit of a pounding.

I have found that the controller is the most important bit - cheap ones just race up to the speed limit and then cut out, so you tend to find the gears a bit irrelevant as you always get pushed up towards the top speed. I found a CycleAnalyst controller worth every penny, as you can fit a separate power (current) limit and throttle rather than a speed limit which feels much more natural.

My 250w motor will take me to 17.5mph on my not-so-light Specialised hybrid. Does that mean 1000w will take you to 70?

I'd be more inclined to buy an electric bike than a bolt on. Reports that the way they interact with your pedalling effort and gears aren't great.

1000W on a bike sounds crazy, pro racers can hold just over 400W on climbs. Just bought the wife an electric hardtail so we can ride together and with a 250W motor, she gives me a right good beasting on the climbs.

When the warranty runs out, the speed sensor is easy to frig and they will do an awful lot more 😁

How do I “frig” a Bosch motor ? It’s frustrating to be limited to 16 mph ,

Dibby it's a rear hub kit I fitted to my own bike so all I have to do is change the wheel size in the settings to get more speed. But works good for me as is.

The Bosch is a plugin dongle if you Google how to remove the speed limiter from a Bosch E-bike motor.

They don't half go, used to get overtaken on the daily commute by a bloke on a derestricted ebike. It was all I could do to slipstream him for a minute
