Hemsley Posted June 10, 2020 Posted June 10, 2020 Hello all. Does anyone know where I can buy 1" leather belt and alligator fasteners, or a more modern alternative? I have an old Myford lathe which I am trying to get running again. Other than needing a good clean and lubrication the lathe is in reasonable condition, the only problem is the main drive belt which is worn and needs replacing. The secondary drive belt is not far behind, so I'll replace both at the same time, before they fall apart and wrap themselves around my ears or whatever I'm working on. After a bit of a search I have not found any leather replacements at what I would consider a reasonable price. I'm happy to replace them with a more modern webbing or rubber alternative, just not sure what to look for or where. A couple of photos of the lathe and belts. I've also thoroughly enjoyed watching a series of videos by Geoffrey Croker showing a Myford ML7 lathe refurb. I like his Kiwi accent and chilled presentation style. Here's a link to his material on YouTube with several other refurbs which I have yet to explore. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUOfupxqzuqSL_rfzA3PENQ Quote
TableLeg Posted June 10, 2020 Posted June 10, 2020 Could you swap out the pulleys for Poly V type and then use new V belts? Quote
Hemsley Posted June 10, 2020 Author Posted June 10, 2020 I could swap the main drive belt pulley for a V type, but I'd not want to try and change the secondary drive belt pulleys which match with the main shaft pulleys. I'll call the lathes.co.uk store tomorrow as it looks like they have some flat belt which might be more affordable. Quote
