Taxing after SORN?

Recommended Posts

It has been many many years since I Sorn'd a car and things have changed a little bit since then. I believe now that you no longer have to re-Sorn the car (like you used to and get fined if you didn't!!) and that the car is automatically 'un' Sorn'd when you tax the car again.

I am looking at taxing my car for a year and paying monthly by Direct Debit.

Anything I need to be aware of doing this?

I know that there is a 5% surcharge for monthly direct debit payments.

Is there a best time of the month to Tax a car to gain any extra days benefit?

If you've sorned then you can't re-tax until the last day of the previous month. No free days anymore

You can. You just pay a month more. Taxed mine two days ago after sorn.

Best wait until 1st June or the tax will start 1st May......

Once on SORN you can tax at any point in the month, but it’ll automatically commence from the 1st day of the month you are in.

As @Stuart says, no free days. But, potentially, lots of lost ones if you aren’t careful.  Taxed ours on 10th May this year, tax started 1st May.

Thanks all

I'm going to wait and start it from start of June as the car is still in bits at the moment anyway and probably will be for a couple of weeks.

Also, gives you the option via direct debit of monthly, six monthly of yearly payments.

Taxed mine today, so lost half of May, BUT if weather is nice for rest of month and roads still a bit quieter, I reckon a better deal than waiting to June and possibly lose two weeks to rain when you could have been driving now...........as always, you pay your money and take your pick!

Mart.

I always tax it for the full 12 months, paid in full, then make sure to SORN as near the end of a month as possible.  Works out slightly cheaper that way. Jokes on me though, I always pay for it, but as the car belongs to and is registered to Vickie, she gets the refund cheque.

Don't forget that you might need an MoT before you tax it. Mine's been on SORN for couple of years and I intend to book an MoT so I can drive it to the test station, then tax it, or not, depending on the results. It is always insured.

Some while back I decided to stop using in on the road as it is potentially lethal, and to track-day it only. But since my son, whose encouragement drives my spannering, relocated to Sydney and married an Australian lass, the drive has been subsumed by domestic matters. I should like to run it again so I hope to MoT it and tax it for at least a month or two.

  • 2 weeks later...

Dawn shake-down drive for me tomorrow and the anticipation is delicious. Anyone else with one sleep to go before they’re back in their Westfield?
