I also have a built in Bluetooth system. I haven’t driven much yet but at motorway speeds it was quiet enough in the lid, so not sure if I need plugs yet. I had no problems hearing the sat nav anyway. The Honda on OEM throttle body with filter under the bonnet and the trackday silencer is better, certainly with a windscreen, not sure how windnoise is on a long run with aeroscreen. The exhaust is right next to your ear though, being on the driver side. I definitely find it more comfortable on long runs when I’m using the intercom headset, so do use earplugs on long trips sometimes. (And always with the hood up!) Doh, how embarrassing, completely forgot my Honda has a load of sound/heat deadening sheet all round the cockpit, so not the best comparison! Quote
NigelO Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 I have an aero-screened, Zetec-powered Westie on throttle bodies, with a cut-out in the bonnet for the air filter. The combined induction and wind noise on anything other than a 5-10 minute blast is uncomfortable and after half an hour or more is borderline painful. I started by using foam earplugs, which are massively better than nothing at all, but still compromised. I've now moved to self-moulded earplugs from Stanley https://www.screwfix.com/p/stanley-sy330-23db-custom-moulded-corded-ear-plugs/69698 They are miles better than foam plugs, but still not perfect - I will eventually fork out the £100+ to have some professionally-moulded plugs As for eye protection, if I'm on my own and going out for anything more than a blast round the block, I use a full-face helmet. If I'm with a passenger, I'll sometimes wear a very thick beanie hat, plus goggles, plus a face mask. I end up looking a bit like a wannabe SAS soldier, but it keeps me warm-ish and safe-ish. I find proper goggles miles better than sunglasses or safety specs - I use these - https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/79552 the "arms" disconnect from the frames and lenses to allow an elasticated strap to be fitted. They also have soft foam backing to the frames to seal against the face, virtually eliminating draughts around the eyes Quote
robhume Posted May 10, 2020 Author Posted May 10, 2020 Unfortunately or fortunately, depending which way you look at it, the home delivery from the supermarket did not have all of the items we ordered, so a perfect excuse to top up the shopping with an essential trip to the local farm shop. It's about 4 miles, so not too far. Reading through the experiences of all above, I bought an open face helmet with pull down visor and also a pair of ear defenders to try without a helmet. Wearing my normal glasses, I put on a flat cap with the ear defenders on top and off I went. With that set up no dust got into my eyes and the noise level with ok, just a soft hum. However mechanically, not so good, could only get 4 gears and when I got back home, I couldn't get the lever to select neutral, (R1 engine) until I shut the engine off and manually pushed the lever on the output shaft, so some investigation and adjustment only I hope. (This is after a gearbox rebuild by others, no names) It's a few years since I last had a bike powered car and found the general handling to be a bit twitchy, so more miles required when restrictions are eased.
