Lyonspride Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 I made my own alarm, based on an ESP8266 WiFi module, using a spring switch to detect the door opening and running blue strobe lights + very loud alarm siren. It has to be switch off via phone or PC on my home network, when it triggers it sets off my car alarm and the garage siren at the same time for maximum noise/confusion, it triggers an alarm on my laptop, it then waits 5s before turning off the garage light (which is also on a Wifi switch module). Currently building another one for my shed, but with IR beam break sensors, the shed currently has one of those portable mini IR alarms and it's awful. I have no use for it any more and was considering putting it in my shed, filling it with petrol instead of water, and then fitting an old ignition coil+spark plug in the line of fire. Though i'm not sure how i'd explain away the charred remains of anyone dumb enough to break in Quote
Blatman Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Spraying petrol might be an issue, but slurry is probably legal... Quote
Dibby Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Same as Nemesis here, I have an Arlo camera system. Wired into the home network and power supply, even if they rip the cameras off the wall and find the hub box the footage is already uploaded to the internet. I'm dubious about online camera systems being hacked to tell when you're out though. Making the security measures too obvious can make tea leaves think there is something worth protecting in the garage. Do what you can to protect your stuff but insurance is there to replace it if they do get in. Quote
Sparkymart Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Sorry for the hijack of this thread @Lyonspride what is this ESP8266 wifi module you mentioned ? Is it an easy to set up until or does it need programming? As it sounds like just the thing I'm after for the new roller garage door I've just fitted. I'm trying to work out a way of informing my phone if it been opened .I've got a 2way wifi relay linked to my phone so I can open/close it .I just want to know if it's been opened Cheers Quote

I have a terrible problem with cats probably because I'm the only one in our road who cultivates their garden! I've tried all the other various types of cat scarers, orange peel, smelly spray, sonic devices etc. but never a water system. And I know its a bit cheeky but as you don't plan on using it any more would you be willing to sell it or maybe even build some more and offer them for sale? I must say your garage alarm sounds very impressive and professional you are very talented. Quote

The one I use in the alarm is running a slightly modified version of ESPeasy, the reason I use that is because it does a lot of the hard work for me. I looked into sending notifications to mobile devices, but there's a problem in that most phones turn off their WiFi after a set idle time, so it would be unreliable at best. The module can however trigger other ESP modules, which how I get it to trigger my car alarm, I fitted a module into my daily barge a couple of years ago to scare off the feral kids from next door. Funnily enough i've had to put it back into use as I levelled the lawn out a few days ago and now the neighbours cats are trying to use the overturned area as a toilet It does work though, it was just two small planks of (scrap) wood, an enclosure for a small 12v battery (from a UPS power supply), a generic car washer bottle+jets (around £20), a PIR sensor (which I think I had to be modify to trigger for 3 second bursts), I added a small solar panel at a later date. It was knocked together very quickly, it barely survived a house move, It looks a mess, but it does the job. Quote
djm Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 Fair enough let me know if you do decide to get rid of it. Glad it works though. Quote
