I got a text message from 3 saying that there would be a RPI related price rise on my plan..... 2.7% they said, I shouldn't whinge too much as I've got unlimited everything for £20 a month on a sim only plan..... BUT I haven't had a pay rise in who knows how long and I haven't worked since the 28th Feb so why should 3 have one.....  A telephone call has been made and the pain of having to deal with a man in Delhi or some such place over the most horrendous VOIP I've ever experienced seems to have paid off.... 10% cheaper, that's a win in my book.

Anyone who wants the same deal can log onto compare the market and see it, it's with 3 and it's £18 a month for 12 months, that gets you unlimited everything on a sim only deal.

I get 1500 minutes, unlimited texts and a gigabyte of data (with data rollover) on sim only from Virgin for £5 per month.  They've threatened to increase it twice and I've threatened to leave twice. MSE has all the deals and I think generally if you find a better one for you then your existing supplier will match or better when you tell them you want to go.

Tell me though Nem, can you use your unlimited data as a hotspot?  Could you plug that sim card in to a sim card router and drive your home broadband from it?  Or is that not allowed?  I keep seeing 'data-only' sim cards advertised so I'm guessing you may have to use one of those in a router and price-wise they aren't there yet

Yes I can tether (Hotspot), they used to limit tethering to 30gb a month but not sure on this new contract until I've read the t's & c's, I know when I first had my Audi with built in hotspot connectivity  3 didn't understand how I wanted to use it so I got a Vodaphone data sim for a fiver a month, but the coverage was awful and even when I'd got a reasonable signal the data throughput was really low.

Whats the max speed of the download? Vodafone have a few unlimited data SIM deals but when the smallprint comes in to focus it's a max 2Mb/s. And of course there's the fair use policy to consider as well, although at 2Mb/s I doubt that's ever gonna be a problem...

There isn't any restriction on speed, you get what the network is capable of, that's been the way 3 have done things for years, as for the fair use policy I haven't encountered one as yet, they also have a 'go binge' policy, this allows you to stream as much as you like from their selected partners, I have no idea what the list is as I know the likes of Netflix and Amazon for me have never been a problem, here's a quick couple of screen shots from my phone taken this morning, the speed at home rivals my home broadband connection and that's fairly typical of wherever I am in the country.

Nice. If they don't limit the speed then great. And it looks like pretty good 4G speed there as well.

Just had another look and there has been some movement on Vodafone. 33 quid a month (contract not PAYG) gets unlimited speed. 28 quid a month gets 10Mb/s and 24 quid gets 2Mb.

Then there are the deals with add-ons. 35 quid a month with "entertainment" gets you 10Mb/s. And there are loads of others. So better than it was when I last looked but still plenty of "offers" to confuse and obfuscate...

TBH the only downside I've experienced dealing with 3 is the overseas call centres.

It's not the accent or the script following that lets it down, (nor the blatant lies...."My name is David and I will be glad to help you today and find the problem with your ekipment") it's the most appalling quality VOIP that they use, it might just be me but the compression and tone just irritates me to the point where it feels like I'm suffering noise induced stress,  it's just not a good advert for a telecommunications company !

I prefer using the on-line chat for many things these days. Not always successfully but at least there is a transcript to prove the inefficient lying little weasel was about as effective as The Donald giving medical advice...
