DonPeffers Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 18 apr 2020 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-52328786 "Climate change: 'Bath sponge' breakthrough could boost cleaner cars." "Now researchers believe they have developed an alternative method that would allow the storage of high volumes of hydrogen under much lower pressure. The team have designed a highly porous new material, described as a metal-organic framework. The key ability of the new framework is that it can potentially store hydrogen and other gases at much lower pressures while not needing an enormous tank." Talk of 500km range might mean electric cars aren't the only 'green' solution. Quote
DonPeffers Posted April 18, 2020 Author Posted April 18, 2020 Calling MOTCO. IIRC there was an earlier post about how your family were getting on with a new electric car and I asked would range be affected in cold weather. The recent Winter wasn't severe but did you notice any change in the car's range? Quote
corsechris Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 Looks interesting as a potential solution to the storage problems but the fundamental one of hydrogen production remains. Quote
DonPeffers Posted April 18, 2020 Author Posted April 18, 2020 Just thinking out loud but shouldn't we be massively scaling up hydro power to even think of powering electric cars; let alone the water to hydrogen possible future cars? Plenty mountains and rain in Scotland and given the floods in England many residents would look to divert the waters power to avoid flooding. Quote

Investment is the problem I would guess, hence wind turbines are everywhere. Quote
Arm Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 A few prominent automotive engineers I worked with considered this type of technology to be one of the better options 1 1 Quote
