stephenh Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 We seem to have 2 threads going at once on this subject! But I agree with all the sentiments. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 How terribly sad, he’s looked frail for some time now. A great loss to the sport as well as his friends and family. Quote
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 RIP Sir Stirling Quote
jeff the joiner Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 He was my hero when I was growing up, watched him driving a Mercedes-Benz at Aintree in the late fifty's and then again in 1980 driving for Audi with a young Martin Brundle as his team mate. A true gentleman who always had time to chat to the race fans. Oulton Park 4 April 19180, photo taken off one of my slides. 1 Quote
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 Jeff my photo above was taken on the same day, that's a young Martin Brundle stood next to Stirling. Quote
jeff oakley Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 A true legend. At a very early Goodwood FOS I went to the gents and in came Sir Stirling and John Surtees chatting away, one stood either side of me. After we had all finished I struck up a conversation with the two of them. Both were warm and happy to chat and probably if he had not been found by one of the people guiding him that day it felt like he would have carried on all day. And the strange thing no one interrupted or tried to get a picture it seem so normal that no one was surprised. He was never the same after his unfortunate accident with the lift shaft at his home but he has had a long illness. He lived life to the full of that there is no doubt. On Youtube Mercedes have posted a lovely tribute to him Quote

Hi Paul if I remember rightly I'v got more slides of Stirling and Martin side by side coming out of Cascades together later on that year, will have a look to find them and post them up 1 Quote
