Back at Christmas time I bought a set of  205 gti  wheels.   I have one set already as trackwheels and r888r ‘s on.    I have been one wheel per lunch time sandblasting and realised this set don’t have tapored wheel nut holes.   I was thinking about trying to knock out the steel inserts then machine the 60 degree taper on the lathe.    Then thought about using the a drill on the mill to machine the taper.   There’s loads of meat in in the steel insert.   Any other suggestions from the community?

Some rims use " flat washered nuts"

I recall having some rims once that ‘tube’ wheel nuts with flat heads. Revolution rims maybe??

Thats the type I was thinking of

Nowt to do with Westies, but the BBS split rims on my XKR are secured with flat shoulder nuts, with thick captive washers on them.

I think I'd just try and get a set of the matching wheel nuts? I used to have a set of proper RS four spokes that used a tube nut with flat washers. Presume 205gti uses something similar.

I have previously done exactly as you describe Tony. The taper is 60 degrees (drill bit is 55) and you can buy a countersink bit for about £20 which will do the job nicely.

I couldn't fit the wheel in my lathe or pillar drill so just used a hand drill.

Dodgy? Maybe in theory. But those wheels aren't going anywhere on a light car with 4 nuts torqued up to 100Nm holding them on!
