Dog GPS tracker. Anyone have one?

I live near a large area of Forestry and as such spend many hours walking through the woods with our dog.

However she definitely can be easily distracted at times especially if she sniffs out a Pheasant or a squirrel.

It got me thinking about whether there was such a thing as a GPS tracker for pets and looking online it turns out there are and a few of them.

Reviews vary though so I wondered if anyone on here actually has and has any advice.

Snap! Wendz wants one for our muttly.

But needs to be tiny as dog's tiny and is easily distracted by wild animals or otherwise when out on a walk.

don’t mention squirrels - usually ends up in a 40- 50 min “Fergus! Heel!” chorus that gets zero response.

I’m sure terriers are “selectively” deaf

Looked at it, but they need charging every few days so decided better of it. Fine for the odd day out, but not a fit and forget.

I share your frustration! My Cocker Spaniel will track everything and I'm sure her hearing must switch off so she can focus more on her smell!
Not a lot of good when your calling her and she continues running in the opposite direction! 😫

Thanks for the reply,

I'm not worried about having to charge it every few days. The one I've been looking at that get good reviews is this one.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pawfit-S-Activity-Included-Lightweight-Waterproof/dp/B07VW5S4CQ?pf_rd_p=9a8c5d91-2d14-469f-8e99-4da1869c32b0&pd_rd_wg=GaOec&pf_rd_r=AV44HAA176E1T31397T7&ref_=pd_gw_cr_simh&pd_rd_w=EYX7k&pd_rd_r=14c69b38-5873-446c-8575-8ee2f0f9004d

Although like many of them you have to subscribe.

The other thing I like about this is that when you return from a walk the unit clips off and slots straight into the charger and fully charges in under 2 1/2 hours.

We have an untrained jack Russell so unfortunately can only let her off on the beach.... I thought about a tracker..but of course that only helps find them.. doesn't stop them running off!

She likes to catch a bit of game!

Yes but that's exactly what I might need. You may well know what it's like walking a dog in the depths of Thetford Forest!

Ours went AWOL yesterday for nearly 15 minutes in the woods. Would have been much easier to know in which direction to head to find her.

I guess it depends on need. Our hound of choice (rescue Collie Greyhound lurcher) will chase most things that move, and now he has settled with us is quite happy to be half a mile away.

If he is deep into something will finish the chase/sniff before coming back. But with a powerful whistle we've not lot him yet.

One of the few times we had a 'Ooo, where is the dog' moment we where walking down the towpath as a group and him managed to find the snicket up to the road bridge and was playing with the car, blind bend, humpback bridge, the works.

Fortunately when my phone rang right in the middle of it I didn't ignore it, some kids had got him to cove over and rang the number on his collar.

However, if you can find one that's a reasonable price/subscription it might be useful and certainly something to have a play with if you want.

Our Parsons Caverussell/Jack Charles can be a nightmare in woods especially for squirrels, so we have to restrict off the lead time.

It would help if we could track her if she did disappear, and be a back up reassurance of not losing her for Dog 'Hotel' when we're away.

I guess also you need one that has good phone coverage.. for the areas you go..

Yes exactly that, that's why I was hoping somebody might actually have some experience of using one and be able to offer some advice.

Or he doesn't 'identify' as Fergus? 😋

A mate of mine uses a Garmin one, mostly for working dogs. Doesn't need a subscription or phone signal as it works with a radio signal from a collar to a handheld unit up to about 10 miles. He swears by it, says it's excellent.

Downside - one collar plus the handheld are about £700!
