Gary Taylor Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 Euro tunnel is really painless and straight forward we used it last summer on our euro trip to Switzerland travelled s/w through France to Troyes, staying off the motorway and on a and b roads, 50mph , speed cameras are well hidden and they appear to utilise police bikes in rural areas once off the beaten path you will need at least a basic bit of french petrol stations are plentiful but in rural areas are often pay at the pump and sometimes the card you used previously won’t work, so either take a couple of different cards or don’t get down onto fumes through France we used Booking.com to book traditional accommodation an old mill house and a family gite and an apartment at a chateau the routes we used are on our Switzerland trip thread in the road trips section any other questions just ask havent done Spain in the westy yet just through work from Bilbao to Lagrono and the basque region 2 Quote
Geoffrey Carter (Buttercup) Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 Everything Gary said above plus. Lots of places are shut on a Monday. I would try to stay on country roads where possible and go through villages etc. France is a big place and I found some of the main routes nowhere near as interesting as getting off the beaten track. Dont forget to drive on the other side of the road. 1 1 Quote
Marcus Barlow - Show and Events Co-ordinator Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 My experience is better roads/driving in Spain as opposed to France, the Pyrenees are fantastic Plenty of experiences in this section for your reference https://forum.wscc.co.uk/forum/forum/100-places-to-visit-and-road-trips/ Quote
Sparkymart Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 We done the ferry from Plymouth to Santander last summer and spent 5 days in Spain visiting Santander, Haro (where all the Rioja comes from) and San Sebastian. We then drove up the coast of France back to Roscoff stopping at Arachon, la Rochelle then across to the Hotel de France just outside of Le Mans and then the last long drive back to Roscoff to catch the ferry back to Plymouth. We had a couple of worrying moments with fuel in Spain when the petrol station was closed down and the next one we could find was nearly 30miles away. We managed to get hotels with private parking at all but one of our stops but we did spend the night at see in a ocean going yacht. One of the best things we done was got a luggage rack which went on the spare wheel and fitted a 12v fridge on it (got that idea from @Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Secretary) it was perfect for keeping food and a couple of tins of Guinness cool also be prepared for a lot of attention from people especially in Spain we had people standing around the car taking photos when we stopped at traffic lights. AndyMM Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Can highly recommend the Plymouth/ Santander route, pecos mountains are brill for driving /sightseeing . Cable car at fuente de is also good and the caves at Altamira. Plenty to go at and the roads are good a bit busier on the weekends and it’s only an hours drive ish from the ferry. Quote
Jude - The Mad Widow Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 The weather is a bit unpredictable in May, I would go straight to Spain. A week isn't long but the quality of the experience makes it feel longer! Quote
MR.C Posted January 13, 2020 Author Posted January 13, 2020 Thanks for the replies I fancy Spain via ferry but its a lot more complicated as in fewer ferries and times as opposed to the more frequent channel tunnel. Quote
Marcus Barlow - Show and Events Co-ordinator Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Worth it... here is what you get in northern Spain , sorry about the quality 2 Quote

MR.C Posted January 14, 2020 Author Posted January 14, 2020 I was thinking Spain hopefully for the warmer weather. But if the weather is good in May France will do nicely. Nice video Terry I'm also in west Yorkshire......... I see a few local runs here maybe😉 1 Quote
