i am looking at buying a kodak digital camera 3.1 million pixels , it comes with a 64mb card , i am just wondering whether to just buy the camera on its own (slightly cheaper than with 64mb card) and pay a bit extra for a 128mb card any idea how many photos (approx) on 3 million pixels the respective cards hold ?

thanks

rough guess about 70 pics.

memory cards are cheap as chips nowadays.

Twice as many as the 64mb card  :p  :D

AFAIK - it would depend on the colour depth (ie the number of different colours it can capture and store) that the camera is capable of.  Also, because the images are stored as JPegs there is some compression which means the image size depends on the picture subject - for example an all white picture of a snowman would be smaller than a picture of Wotbox's multicoloured car.

As a guideline try one out in a shop and set it to max resolution (pixels) and max quality (colours) and see how many pictures the camera itself says you can fit on the card that's in it at the time.

PS  -  SEiGHT is dead right extra cards are dirt cheap.

It doesn't cost much for extra storage media - go to someone like Jessops, and buy their own brand cards.   They're just as good as the kodak ones will be anyway.

As to the total storage capacity of a 128mb card, I have a 6.5 million pixel camera, and I get about 35 full size, high quality pictures on a 64mb card.   so you will find your camera should hold 140 plus.   the equivalent of 4 rolls of 35mm film, or half what  I'd generally take on a two week holiday.

The other factor of course is battery capacity.   If they are available, go for a couple of rechargable packs - it never hurts to have a spare one handy.

The best place to find the card capacity out for certain though would be the camera shop where you buy the camera from.

Check the web for memory cards, you may find them alot cheaper, you may be able to go for a 256Mb. postage will be the issue.

I've used scan.co.uk before, but I recon you may be better to go to a specialist memory card web dealer.

I've found that www.ebuyer.com have very cheap SD Cards and Scan are pretty good too.

Also have a look at www.digital-depot.co.uk.

Best I saw was a 512 MB card for £99+Vat on ebuyer.

I've used the Flash Card Store to buy compact flash cards. Prices still seem good, and the service was excellent. Currently a 512Mb Compact Flash card is £79.99.   :blues:

I haven't checked the market recently ( I have all the camera RAM I need! ) but a couple of years agao when I went through this exercise, the larger capacity CF card were at a premium and it was actually cheaper to buy two 128Mb CF cards rather than one 256Mb - I found this was a positive advantage as after every 50 shots ( 5.2 Megapixel camera ) I could put my photographs away somewhere safe and by numbering the CF cards themselves and using them in rotation, no one card gets used more than any other so although I take a lot of photographs  :D  my cards are not exactly over-used and apparently they do have a finite lifespan ( probably millions of sessions thus negating my careful planning! ).

Jessops will price match any deal that you can find on a UK based internet site. :t-up:

NB UK based does not equate to .co.uk !

The camera's manual will tell you how many pics to expect to get on a card.  I have a Fuji camera with a 128Mb SD card, but I think that different cameras will use different levels of compression so my experiences are not necessarily comparable. :)

There is a huge variety in quality and speed of memory cards and you may end up buying a complete dog of a card that takes ages to save each image. Not a problem if you are waiting several seconds between pictures, but can be a pain if you are in a hurry.

Check out DP Review for all your digi camera queries.

As well as their reviews and sample shots, they also have some excellent forums. There is one dedicated to memory cards/storage here:

Hi I have a kodak 3.1 and just on the memory in the camera it will take 12 pics on high resolution and 64 on low setting there is also a medium setting. Even on low setting they enlarge well on the computor Cheers Tom :t-up:
