Rob Hunter - Club Secretary Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 I'd been having some issues with my Zetec Blacktop, bogging down, spitting back through the trumpets, too much popping and banging on over run etc. Despite my fiddling, I just couldn't get the carbs to run correctly. After much searching I spoke to Alan who owns Carbcare in Lichfield who has just been out and serviced my twin 45's. What a knowledgeable guy! He works on various classics and kit cars, what he doesn't know about Webers, SU's and Strombergs is worth writing down. He's a real pleasure to talk to and even owns a Robin Hood himself. An hour and a half of his fettling and a quick test drive and all is good! 😁 Apparently he's starting to run some seminars on the dark art of carbs... Only SU's so far, but I've tried to convince him to do one on Webers! 2 Quote
Andy Westwood Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 He's a great guy and as you say he is very knowledgeable. He serviced my weber carbs early this year as I was having a similar problem. 1 Quote

Has some great stories about some lovely motors too 😀 Quote

Airflow was balanced across all 4 chokes (I'd done that with my syncrometer) but I was worried they were running lean. As the car had sat before I bought it, all the jets, emulsion tubes etc needed a good clean. He stripped them all down, tweaked the mixture, checked for air leaks and adjusted the floats. Then rebalanced and reset the idle and checked the exhaust gasses for carbon and CO2. He also spotted that one of the bolts that locks the venturi in place on one choke was missing (not something I'd have spotted!) that would have contributed to it running lean. My chokes are a bit large for the standard cams (but good for top end power) so she won't pick up completely cleanly below 2500 but he's sorted the pops and bangs, no more spitting back through the filters and no power drop off above 5500 revs. She runs so much more cleanly now and sounds awesome. All in all a £115 well spent! 1 Quote

Absolutely no surprise, I found lots of parts missing from my DCOE 40's, apparently people used to do stupid stuff to Webers back in the days before the internet, when rumours and old wives tails ruled. Old school equivalent of fuel saving magnets. 1 Quote
