BamBam49 Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Hi All, ive just joined and I am building a SDV using a Mazda with the 1.8 engine. While I’m in the early stages I just wanted to ask for advise and experiences from your builds if you have any dos or do nots. Look forward to hearing from you! Bambam 1 Quote
Trevor Little (Trevturtle) - Treasurer Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Have a look in Tech talk>build diaries. lots of useful information e.g link to recent builds Quote
Kingster Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Welcome to the club. As Trev says, look in the build diaries for inspiration and then start one of your own. A build diary not only acts as a record of your achievement but will let others help you to get it right. Saved my bacon a few times during my own build! Quote
Dommo Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Welcome! Three things spring to mind: The build manual is a guide, not a bible. You will have missing parts Keep some of the little jobs aside as they can be done when you're blocked on another job There's plenty of build diaries on here now, so have a look around as suggested above. Definitely, don't be afraid to ask stupid questions! Quote
Rory's Dad Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 There is no such thing as a stupid question but there are so many stupid answers! Welcome to the club!! Quote
Stu Faulkner Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Welcome. Are you using a MK2 donor and how much of it are you planning to use? Quote
Alan Cutler (Adge) - Dorset AO Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Highly recommend posting a build diary. I found it was a good way to tap into the knowledge and experience of members. As said, reading other build diaries (all models) is a useful source of information. Quote
Robin Parker (Red Spider) - Yorkshire AO Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Welcome to the club, and good luck with the build. As you are in Glossop, why not come along to one of our meetings? The Sunday morning breakfast meeting would be closest to you, we meet at the Red Kite on Denby Dale Road just off j39 of the M1 on the third Sunday of the month, next one is on the 17th November. Although we have no MX5 builds locally, I'm sure you'll get plenty of info and help, you're also not too far from @Julie Hall - Peak District AO area. 1 Quote
Andrew O Byrne White - Ireland AO Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Welcome and congrats on a great choice of car! Read as many of the build threads as you can - regularly! They've saved me a few times. Also, this thread is very useful: I know Westfield were working on a new build manual for the Mazda SDV so not sure if you'll have the old or new one with your build, but some great info in there! Gary Taylor Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 from sunny Scotland, to a new world of fun as said above start a build thread and there’s a lot of information on here and quite a few of us have gone the Mazda sdv route myself included goid luck with the build and I’ll look forward to your updates Quote
Julie Hall - WSCC AO Representative Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Hello and welcome from the Peak District area. We meet up most weekends, including all through the winter, feel free to come along, look at our cars and ask lots of questions. Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Welcome to the club forum Bambam There’s plenty of us here who have built SDV’s so they’ll be no shortage of advice from those of us who gave been there and made the same mistakes in the past. as others have commented, don’t view the build manual as a set of step by step instructions but rather as a guide. You don’t have to follow it in page order and there’s nothing wrong with adding a few extra washers here or there if needed. Quote
