Someone has driven a truck into my house.

This morning, a delivery driver caught the back of his 18T lorry on the sandstone steps running up the side of my house. He mumbled something about the throttle bodies being too responsive.

There is significant damage and as we are in a conversation area I assume it will be ££££. I’ve already contacted the company (he called it in too) with photos etc so I assume their insurance will sort it.

Question is - do I need to let my home insurance know?

Thanks

Maybe it's because it's wet and he didn't disconnect his arb's

Hate to sound boringly sensible after previous responses but, yes! Do tell your insurer as you may need their help if things start to get messy.

Hes clouted the iron railing - every Stone on the stairway that the railing is set into is smashed or cracked. The mortar were the staircase meets the wall is cracked and  the iron railing is bent in a couple of places.

I need to get some quotes and take it from there :@

Ask your insurers for the names of any companies they might sub the work to. They took on the risk. One assumes (yes, I know...) that should the worst happen they would have access to an appropriate expert to help. Plus if you get a quote from "their" guy, it might make cost negotiations a little easier with whoever ends up paying for it. Telling the hauliers insurance company that the quote came from a contractor recommended by your insurers should carry some weight.

I' be more bothered that he's knocked the whole house down and only left the staircase

Get in touch with your insurance company - they will then send out their own surveyor/structural engineer who will then draw up a schedule of remedial/repair works this will all be sent to haulage companies insurance who will then, hopefully, agree to undertake works with an approved contractor - do not undertake or appoint anyone to undertake works without prior written agreement by your insurance company - this will only create issues later

I’ve been in touch with home insurer. Absolutely useless. They’ll only help if I’m actually making a claim.

Big black mark for Bradford and Bingley.

That's correct you will need to instigate a claim ...... that's how it works, your insurance will then counter claim from Haulage company insurance ........ if you're looking to do it yourself or employ your own contractor the insurance company won't bother to do anything
