Nick A Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 Shouldn't that have been 13 pin socket ? That's what most manufactures use now, think it's a european thing Quote
minghis Posted March 2, 2003 Author Posted March 2, 2003 Following some interseting input I've got a few more ideas. BMW 320D SE perfect, but no CD and no leather. Add them and it's way too expensive, but a worthy option. Seat Leon diesel turbo, too small. Seat Toledo V5 - no-ones commented on this but I'm going to have a look 'cos its got everything, inc sat-nav. Audi A6 1.9tdi SE - sorry, I hear what you say but too slow. Power to weight ratio 89bhp/tonne. Bananaman, what are you suggesting - your link doesn't work and didn't see a previous thread? Passat 2.5 V6 Tdi - I'm adding this one also, and possibly the Audi A4 2.5 V6 Tdi. I still fancy an Alfa 156 or a Saab! Thanks everyone for your input, I'll let you know what I get when I get it, which knowing my companies logic will be mid summer. Minghis. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 That's it 13 - unlucky for some, mainly BMW owners who are told it's a european thing and then have to fork out another £20+ on an adaptor Quote
Mark Stanton Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 I still fancy an Alfa 156 I know someone who had one of them it lasted about five weeks during which time it was constantly going back to dealers - loads of stuff going wrong with it He got a full refund and ended up buying a Honda Civic R instead. Fat Albert Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 If you're seriously considering a BMW 320d, add the MG ZTd. I have a buddy who, like you, wasn't spending his own money, drove both and leased the MG on merit. MG now chip and warranty the BMW engine for you which gets round the contractual restriction which stops them selling the car with 150bhp (its the same engine) and both my friend and every review I've read put the chassis ahead of the 320 (hence the introduction of the 320d Sport suspension option). There's just no comparison with the interior, IMO the BMW is cheap and not very cheerful by comparison. Now if it was your own money things might be different Quote
Warren E Smith Posted March 3, 2003 Posted March 3, 2003 If its your own money (which it isn't so this is irrelevant ) then you'd join L7CGB & then you're entitled to major discounts on MG/Rovers Up to 20% in some cases Worth thinking about for anyone else in the optout boat. Quote
kennedyj Posted March 3, 2003 Posted March 3, 2003 Hang on a mo while I put me pipe down, and get comfy in me slippers... Try the S60 D5, you may like it (if you really want a diesel). I tried one and eventually went for the 2.4 turbo petrol, mainly because I have had diesels for the last 8 years and fancied a change. However I found the D5 to be smoother, and less thrashy than a certain V6 diesel (except at idle), reasonably powerful, oh so comfortable and quite sharp handling (for a FWD car). If you go for the SE trim you get leather and loads of toys as well. ...now where did I put me packet of Old ******* and me matches, has corry started yet?, why don't they paint "Volvos Only" in the middle lane of the motorways, I do hate having to change lanes all the time, where did I leave me cap, I'm sure I had it on in the bath... -JohnK Quote
Bananaman Posted March 3, 2003 Posted March 3, 2003 minghis Try this site, you can do a back to back comparison of 4 different cars, might be some use? whatcar.com Andy I get my 320 back today after 10 days of driving a Micra carn't waite Quote

New Volvo's are streets ahead of the old "tanks" - really! Got the 2.0T myself, but in SE trim plus a few other extras - all the toys to play with and plenty quick enough. Next time I will be looking at the D5, and there will have to be a good car to better that.... Oh, how about the new Audi A4 with their FSI engine.... Quote
gregh Posted March 3, 2003 Posted March 3, 2003 Audi A4, various diesel and petrol options available, or sod the tax and get a Impreza Greg Quote
Ian Podmore Posted March 3, 2003 Posted March 3, 2003 Just to add my two penny worth! I would strongly recommend driving the MG ZT. The handling is incredible. Just ordered mine Got less than 100 metres down the road on my 3 day test drive and knew it was exactly what I needed. Tax is OK at 163 g CO2. Should be able to get a nice spec for £22k list. They have also got a special offer where MG give the company back 2 x rentals. Would also look at A4. The 2.0 FSI engine has only got about 173 g CO2 so the tax is very low. I wouldn't touch a Laguna, my demo car was sooo unrefined I couldn't believe it. If had not been in a hurry to get to Dartford from the Midlands I would have taken it back early. Mondeo TDCI is very quick, but they are everywhere. Happy hunting. Quote
chrisbin Posted March 3, 2003 Posted March 3, 2003 I reckon it all comes down to where you do your driving.... Most of my 30k+ p.a. is on the m-way and the Volvo is fantastic for that......most comfortable seats ever (without exception when people sit in it for the first time they all say "wow, thats nice"......and they're usually referring to the seat.... ), cruise control, best stereo ever (11 speaker Dolby Pro-logic etc etc), electric leather seats with memory, etc etc etc Try speccing a Beemer to the same level......... And after all, you've got the Westy for your B road thrills!! Good luck - half the fun is choosing! Quote
Jon Murray Posted March 3, 2003 Posted March 3, 2003 Get a Witter fitted much cheaper and uses a 7 pin hook-up instead of those stupid 14 or 21 pin things that BMW use just ask Dickie B Sounds interesting Mark, Is he in that line of things? Jon Quote
Mark Stanton Posted March 3, 2003 Posted March 3, 2003 Nope, just that he wanted a proper BMW tow-bar fitted to his - then found out the hard way with sockets and price and forked out another £20+ for an adaptor LOL that'll learn him Quote
