Not sure if I’m reading it right, but it looks like motorsport UK have deleted the need for a cat on our cars  if not needed for the mot. 👍

So how does affect Modified Production cars that are not road registered and thus do not need to pass any government legislation?

It is very specific and the only way to regulate it... and the justification is pretty clear to:

 

Road going car that does not require CAT in the public highway (that means, indeed, road registered, insured, Mot'd and taxed...) Does not requiere CAT for motorsport.

 

Else... It does. Categorised as a race car... 

 

To be fair, should not be any difference from a Radical SR3 to a sprint purpose Westfield, or a purpose build saloon car... They are build specifically for motorsport. That was the weak point of the proposal that is been tried several times to abolish for Kit cars... or sprinting... but this is NOT possible.  Where do you draw the line? What is a racecar and what isn't? why sprinting should not and circuit racing should?

 

Easy, Roadgoing=Highway regulations + safety. 

Non roadgoing= MSA regulations.

 

 

I would agree however, that isn't correctly formulated, or is not detailed enough.

 

That, basically means that most of the modern purpose build cars will still need CAT anyway... unless you move down categories and swap to 1B tyres.

Am I also reading these proposals correctly that the ROPS requirements have been relaxed for westfield's complying with the Road specialist production catagory and therefore a K1.6.1 K1.6.2 Roll bar will revert back to only being a reccomendation as it was up until a few years ago?

I have read and not fully taken in the changes yet but Nick Algar is our expert and has already told me that there is some relaxation on ROPS for standard cars etc

Interesting to find out which tyres are compliant for road cars (ie they carry the necessary EU 117 labelling).

EU regulations state remoulds are exempt from 117 labelling so unless specifically submitted for EU testing are likely to be non-compliant.

The rule changes are just proposals at the moment and are open for feedback and could well change as result. The fact that the proposed catalytic converter rule change doesn't cater for specialist mod prod cars could be worthy of some feedback to attempt to get the proposal changed to include these cars as well?

I too am finding the tyre proposal a bit un-clear, but thats probably me.

 

Are they saying any tyre that has the EU label will be ok for road going  rather than just the list tyres.

 

Of course some one took the discussion to try a popular remould. wonder who  . 

 

 

Its good to see some re working of the rules though and in general and there does seem to be some common sense creeping in. Whatever next

Am I right in thinking that the mot test requires cars pass an emissions test. This is stricter for most cars built after 1992 such that most would probably struggle without a cat fitted but some probably could.

 

it does not actually check physically for a cat 

 

So if a car has passed an mot how could it be questioned by a scrutiniser without emissions testing equipment ? 

 

Also for a kit car are the emissions tested at IVA and hence mot not based on age of engine ?

As I understand it if a newish car has passed IVA without a CAT then it is ok . If a car turns up for an event with an MOT that did not require a CAT then thats ok too. Cars with Logbooks or passports ( and no current MOT) usually running in modified production classes will need apparently need a CAT
