cast iron Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Hungaroring, what a master class from Merc, after the previous fiasco. Can you imagine being dealt that tyre strategy, the plan being for a last lap overtake! Lewis was cool as a cucumber. 2 Quote
Rory's Dad Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Agreed - but if Red Bull had pitted first the reverse would have been true! Quote

Not so sure the Red bull had the pace to do what the merc/LH did. And if max pitted first I suspect the kinder-on-its tyres merc would have been able to go to the end. Especially as Lewis's tyres were 6 laps younger. Great race again though and great call by the merc strategists. 1 Quote
Captain Colonial Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Red Bull must have been flabbergasted when Lewis pitted, knowing they’d just been boxed into a corner. Brilliant strategy, phenomenal driving. Mac is up and coming for sure, but he’s still got lessons to learn before he can snatch the crown. Quote
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Could you all hear me shouting at the telly? 😆 What a race, there are not many drivers you could say to "it will work out just overtake Max on the last lap" brilliant Quote
stephenh Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Prior to this race, the Mercedes strategic calls have been far from good on occasions. However, this time, they really were "on the ball." That said, I doubt that there are many other driver/car combinations currently who could have achieved that. In fact, I don't think there are any. Quote
pistonbroke Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Full marks to Max for me , drove a great race in a slower car , pity about the tyre thing though , ruined what could and should have been a really great race between two hard chargers . Perhaps if tyres were designed to go the distance we could see some proper racing on track , not win or lose via pit stop strategies worked out by computers . Overtake Buttons . DRS . make a mockery of a once great sport . What next ? How about we leave the drivers in the pits to work the cars by X box type remote control Quote

Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 I agree with Bernie. If necessary, run the race in two heats with half an hour in between so there are no routine in-heat stops much as Moto GP is. You start, you race, someone wins on track. Quote
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 The point is they took a chance, pitted and dropped back 20 seconds, Lewis then had to claw back that 20 secs AND then pass Max, no easy task, and nail biting for the spectators. Quote
djm Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 Yes a good race and brilliant strategy. It was dependent on three things 1. Lewis's ability to close the gap and pass 2. Mercedes performance advantage and 3.Gasly not being there as a rear gunner. Christian Horner has said that Gasly's performance is now hurting the the team! I don't think that it will be long before he's booted out! Actually it's four things it wouldn't have worked without the 20 second gap. Quote
Rory's Dad Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 It was the CHANCE that made it EXCITING! 1 Quote
djm Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 It's a shame about the state of F1 overall apparently four drivers from four different teams were lapped twice and one driver was lapped three times! Sad! Quote

Not if Max's tyres had lasted out , he became a sitting duck after tey went off , I dont see whats particularly exciting about a driver in a far superior car passing another whose tyres are shot . Interesting outcome ? maybe , but exciting ? doubt Hamilton would agree , in fact I think he said as much . Call it what you want but for me, not having tyres that last a race distance robbed us of a great race . Who would not want to see LH and Max flogging it out hell for leather for lap after lap , not winning by vertue of a computer aided pit stop working out the odds Quote
