westyfield Posted February 27, 2003 Posted February 27, 2003 Here in Derbyshire I reckon we've got some of the best "driving" roads around. However, I am prepared to bet that you lot might know better. I ventured in to North Wales last year and was amazed at the landscape. Whenever "Autocar" or "Top Gear" go testing their BM's and TVR's they often head to Wales.. but just where in Wales? If you were planning a weekend searching for the best roads where would you head? "Trans-Cymru Events" do welsh tours for classics and classic replicas in March, April and October but I don't really fancy following the MG brigade around ! info@transcymruclassic.co.uk[/email] Quote
scott beeland Posted February 27, 2003 Posted February 27, 2003 During this yr I'm going to get my head round reorganising the once popular Portmeirion run for next yr. Will probably take a route through Conwy/ Ogwen valley (undoubtedly some of Wales' great roads) and across into Portmadoc. In answer to your question the Horseshoe Pass has to be done. Road number in a mo' when I dig map out of the car Quote
david jones Posted February 27, 2003 Posted February 27, 2003 I`d agree Scot Horseshoe pass but a bit scarey at full chat, nice run to Conway and Bala, infact all around there Quote
scott beeland Posted February 27, 2003 Posted February 27, 2003 A4085 caernarfon to Portmadog is good (scenery and corners) as is4086 caernarfon to CapelCurig (via snowdon base) Pretty much anywhere in the Snowdonia Nat. Park was made for us Why the f*** do I live in Liverpool?? Quote
chrisbin Posted February 28, 2003 Posted February 28, 2003 Not that I'm biased.....but pretty much anywhere South Wales valleys up to and then around Brecon are brilliant. Black Mountains (a lot of car testing done in this area) adn Welsh Borders. West Wales is great too, out of season.... and then there's up North as already mentioned. Its difficult to not find a good road But look out for those pesky camera vans...... Quote
Fat Albert Posted February 28, 2003 Posted February 28, 2003 The family have stayed several times in a large house (sleeps 14) near Blaenau Ffestiniog set in 100 acres. Makes a wonderful base for the walking/biking/blatting paradise that is East or West from here. The roads across the hills can be so much fun that I've even been known to get the family 4x4 sideways on occasion Best out of season but must admit that I haven't been since the dreaded white van made the scene. Most heart attack making moment was when pushing hard in a friends Boxster on a mountain pass heading for Caemarfon. The car was sideways on a blind right hander with a several hundred foot drop to left when a RAF Hercules (4 engine transport) presented itself exactly at my height in a 45 degree bank contour flying the mountain coming the other way. It was not more than 50ft away , I could see the pilots grinning (metaphorically). Nice to know that blatting is not restricted to 2/4 wheels Quote
Noel Johnson Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 Hi Andrew, I blasted around the elan valley dams a couple of years ago and loved it the drive had everything, long fast bends, sweeping vistas, tight hairpins, sheep stood in the middle of the road I could go on and on. I'll gladly show you the route if you want. Cheers mate, Noel (I didn't sell the car BTW ) Quote

Mark Stanton Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 Steve's favourite roads are probably the M50 or A55 to and from Llys Y Fran and Ty Croes - fastest quietest sheep free roads OUT of Wales The time warp begins after Ross on Wye at which time you enter the twiglet zone *Hook baited waits for first bite* Quote
