alan jones Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Hi my name is Alan and I've been following for awhile now. I now have a problem that I hope all you top mechanics can help me with. I have a 54 renault master and I am shredding fan belts by the week. I have checked the alignment of the pulley wheels and they look good. In the last few months I have gone through 8 fan belts !!! I have had 3 new power steering pumps and 2 new tensioners !!! I've also changed the free wheel alignment pulley wheel as the edge of it snapped off. Each time that it shreds when refitting a new one I have checked all the pulley wheels for free flowing and inspected the pulley wheels are clear of debris. It seem to happen every 2/300 miles. It's shredded on both edges at different times so it's not specific to either side. I've checked for any leaks onto the belt and it's clean, unless it takes out the power steering pump, then the fluid is everywhere. Only once has the belt actually snapped. Please help desperate now. thanks Quote
Kit Car Electronics and Essex AO Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Hi Alan, are you sure that the belt is taking out the power steering pump and not the other way around? Maybe there's a problem with the rack that's pushing too much load onto the pump and the belt? Just an idea Quote

Just an idea Hi, thanks, I'm not sure, as when it's shredded on the inside the bits of fan belt that were flapping around seem to wind around the inside of the pump wheel and it must have a lot of tension on it as it forces the wheel out and breaks the seal on the pump. I'm not very good at this as you can probable see. thanks for you help. Quote
jeff oakley Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Alan, if you are not very good at this I would suggest taking it to a good garage as you may well be chasing this otherwise, but for a selection here goes, A failing crank damper, flexing when running. Too much end float on the crank. When you are measuring it it is in line, put foot on clutch and there could be movement. A pulley that is running out of true Is it a ridged belt, if so are any ridges damaged on any of the pulleys? Wear on the edges means it is moving some how, does it make any noise? Mounting for Power steering pump flexing, especially when in high pressure, with engine running watch as someone steers lock to lock for movement. Not familiar with that engine but is anything touching when it is running and moving, an air duct, cover or some such. That's all I can think of at the moment. HTH Quote

HTH Thanks for your input Jeff, lost on the crank damper and end float !!! tried the power steering as you suggested, seen no movement. It is a ridged belt and don't see any damage on it or the pulleys. There is nothing touching it whilst running. As you say as I don't know much so I will take it to a good garage with your suggestions. Thank you for taking the time to try to help me. Regards Alan. Quote
jeff oakley Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Hi Alan, The crank damper is usually two parts bonded together by rubber, these can start to fail and then they can wobble side to side. Usually you will see some sign of cracking. End float is where the crank moves in and out. A crank has what they call thrust washers which restrict movement when you put your foot on the clutch. If they wear again the crank can move which makes the belt run out of line. Again a good garage will be able to check that easily enough. Good luck with it Quote
