My Dad 82 years old wants to track day

When I was a child in the sixties I remember my Dad always working on

MG TC’s  he had at least three at anyone time.

Beautiful road car, Super charged race car and one in bits.  I recall eight TC’s on the drive once, consequently this took its toll on there marriage and at eight years old he was gone on to pastures new.  We are still in touch, me being a rubbish Son and he being a rubbish Dad, but a few times a year we get together.

 

When he left he never raced again but enjoyed fast cars and motorbikes right until last summer when he got leukaemia.

Now my visits in the WF are very special to him and he loves me to hammer around the Mendip’s.  

He can just about get in and out of the WF with a steadying hand ( which is saying something as I have friends who could not)

But I would love him to drive it, Doctors had advised him not to drive ( don’t know why?)

 

I was wondering if there were any tracks that would let him have a drive?

If he still has a driving license, then I don't see why he couldn’t do a track day. I don’t remember being asked health or age questions, although an organiser’s disclaimer is usual. If a track day is too adventurous, maybe a local friendly open air kart track might let him have a few laps, by himself of course, not with a swarm of Lewis Vettels.

 

Good on you and good on your dad. If he finds an MG TC in the back of his shed, tell him I’ll look after it.

Speak to Motorsport events ltd, the run really good track days and also have individual private tuition on track away from the main body of cars which may suit better

Or what about a wscc organised event at Curborough or Llandow??

First thing, sorry to hear of his illness but the next question is a simple one, is he fit enough to drive? If he is and has a licence then go for it. I am guessing that his Doctor is worried about tiredness especially if he is having treatment.

 

I would suggest that he doesn't drive alone and you make sure he is safe through the day. Make the best of the time you have whatever you decide

My 18 yr old daughter wanted to try a trackday a few years ago, only 2 months after she passed her driving test. So took her with me to an airfield trackday and took her a passenger at first to see if she was ok with the speed we go at. That was ok with her so I asked the organisers (Javelin) if she could drive round the taxiways to accustom herself with the Westfield at a slower speed and they were ok with that.

In the afternoon she was confident to drive on the circuit and she did ok, I was proud of her, even though she got into couple if spins.

Now, if you approach it in the same way at Abingdon airfield with MSE,  I'm sure they help your dad out, just ask them.
