TYRE software update not free anymore??

I've used tyre (trace your route everywhere) a while now but seems the programme does not work anymore and when you download it now asks for APi code via google account, it says its still free but you have to enable billing? 

 

Anybody else still using it successfully?

That's because Google used to allow pretty much unlimited calls to its Geolocation and Maps API, so developers could use their own API key and then let users access Maps etc.

 

Google now limit the number of calls and change you (a small amount) if you hit a certain number of calls in a day/month - so if you use your own API key for hundreds/thousands of other users then it will trip the limit and cost you money.

 

Thus Tyre (and no doubt others) are looking to offload the API calls by asking people to use one of their own keys - which although free for a large number of calls, will require a paid account to access it.
