For more than 4Gb of RAM you need a 64 bit machine. Thankfully the vast majority of PC's and servers around now are 64 bit. More RAM means applications will load and run faster and good hard drives will mean reliable storage.

As with cars, buy the highest performance item you can find that falls within budget.
