Danny Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 AAAArrrggghh! My first job on my westy! Been looking forward to this for a month. And ive hit a big wall! I checked if I had lugs on the vertical stay on the chassis. I did have. Bought the roll over bar. Just removed the rear cover, cleaned everything up and..... The fuel tank is not central and there is not enough room on the right hand side for the lock nut to fit between the fuel tank and the bracket/lug. The flexible coupling is not big enough to enable the tank to move over! Is it just a case of buying a longer peice of rubber pipe/coupling and shoving the tank over 10-15mm? Please help! Cheers Quote
Westfieldman Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 It could be that easy but then again......... Quote
knipex Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Welcome to the fun. Just finished a rebuild so I know exactly how you feel. Why not just disconnect the flexible coupling and see if everythign else fits. If so just get you piece of hose. If not you need to look further. Remember its the chalanges that make it fun. It give you all the more satisfaction when you finish the job. Quote
Graham.J Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 I have exactly the same problem with mine.... My rear stay wouldn't go into the space between the lugs because there was a jubilee clip on the fuel filler that was in the way, that's been moved and it fits very tightly. I'm trying to work out how to get the bolt through now, but I've still got to measure up the cover at the rear to see where to drill the holes for the stays. I didn't think of moving the tank over and getting a new pipe, I may have to look into this. Graham Quote
Mark Stanton Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Is it just a case of buying a longer peice of rubber pipe/coupling and shoving the tank over 10-15mm? Hopefully yep You will need to check connections from both inlet at filler cap connection and outlet at bottom of tank If you're sliding tank over both may need adjusting Tank was probably originally put in off centre to ease the connection of filler cap Quote
Danny Posted December 26, 2003 Author Posted December 26, 2003 Thanks fellas! Just been out doing a bit of floodlight tinkering! I think with a longer length of pipe I may be able to sort it! (The fuel tank that is) Just switched the ignition on to test the electrics after removing the stereo and didnt hear the fuel pump clicking away! AAArrrgh these things are sent to test us! Going to tuck into some christmas stella now! Quote

knipex Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Ahhhhhhh electrics Cut your hair short NOW. (otherwise you will have pulled it all out by the time you get finished) Quote
Danny Posted December 26, 2003 Author Posted December 26, 2003 Where did I put that big wall to bang my head against? Dont worry about the hair! Shave it all off anyway! Just have to see what joy tomorrow brings! Can only think that the fuel pump was taking feed from the same fuse as the stereo. In fact havnt a clue! - I may take up stamp collecting! Where did I put that beer? Quote
Neil Purdie Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Is there enough room for a bolt HEAD instead of a NUT? If so just lift the tank ( two bolts? ) and insert the bolt from the inboard end. Minimal fettling required. Neil Quote
dasamdy Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 but what happens when you have a big off/rear ender and the head or nut of your fastener punches a hole in your tank, the fuel ignites on the sparks from your newly fitted roll bar and you slide ungraciously down the road upside down in a 25 litre fuelled fireball?? Merry Christmas Dave Quote

felters Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 Dave - truly a worry. For the same reason, I always put my spliff out before going on track. Quote
Danny Posted December 31, 2003 Author Posted December 31, 2003 Ye Ha! Got my tank sorted, just shifted it over by swan necking the coupling pipe! - Gentle persuasion was the word of the day! Even sorted my electrics problem! Dodgy fuel cut off switch that someone has fitted in the past! Enjoyment has nothing to do with cigars. Everything about sorting westy problems! Quote
