Nissan SR20DET engine

I used to be into Japanese turbo cars and can vouch for the SR20DET engine. The older CA18DET is better however (cheaper to buy and tune and can handle lots of boost). It has a cast iron block however so is perhaps a bit heavy for a Westie.

Having said that, the CAT car referred to has a 1.8 Sylvia engine so it is either a CA18DET or (more likely) a CA18ET (single cam) engine so perhaps the weight is not so bad.

I wouldn't touch the single cam engine as the cranks are supposed to be weak.

These people know a lot about Nissan tubo engines:

I work at Nissan as an Engineer on engine assembly. We used to build 2.0 litre motors - last fitted in Tinos - we sent them to Spain.

It is a very strong motor with a stiffer and lighter block than a Cosworth. The biggest problem you may find is the height. If you decide to go for it - Source a Serena van engine. They have a lot of the GT bits fitted to cope with pulling the weight and the heat of the enclosed engine bay. Send me a PM if you want more info - Part numbers etc :)  :xmas:  :)

The Westfield dealer in Perth, (Western Australia) uses and suggests the SR20 motor as a standard fitment.  He has just completed a turbo and intercooled SR20DET version for a client.  Turbo and N/A versions use the V8 style bonnet and everything looks like it fits pretty well.

Contact details are info@westfield-sportscars.com.au or see more here

Very few 1.6-2.0 litre modern Ford or GM motors available over here.  Majority of Aussie Clubmans use Toyota 4AGE motors.

Nearly finished building my Christmas present - the garage to build the Westy in! 6m x 4m should be adequate I think.  Put the last sheet of tin on today under a sizzling 34 deg C sun.  The kit I am really interested in should arrive in March. :)  I will be using Nissan power simply because that is what the dealer recommends (and also the local hoons have a tendency to stuff 200SX's into trees around here!;).  I will be going without the turbo though.
