MrPoseidon Posted May 4, 2019 Posted May 4, 2019 Hi. As per title, looking to repacks the solid cast iron ones for lighter alloy ones. Car also has the M16 callipers, which work surprisingly well. So not sure if I’ll need adaptors or new callipers. 🤷♂️ Cheers.
AdamR Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Sounds like this is a weight saving exercise? If so, replacing the brake calipers is cheaper, easier and more effective. You'll save around 7kg total (calipers to 4 pot alloy ones) instead of 1kg total (uprights to alloy ones) 👍
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 The alloy uprights themselves, don’t save that huge a chunk of weight, as to get similar strength to the old Cortina units, they have to be beefed up. The hubs on the other hand are a big weight saver, if you change from the original to lightweight alloy versions, likewise, so are modern lightweight four pot callipers. (Don’t necessarily expect any greater breaking effort though, and sometimes the heavier stiffer original calipers have better feel than some of the lightest weight alternatives, which in extreme track use, can flex.)
NDS Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Hi , Have both hubs and uprights. Please send me a PM. Neil
MrPoseidon Posted May 8, 2019 Author Posted May 8, 2019 Ok. Good valid points, would never have figured that out. Cheers.
