DonPeffers
Tymoshenko v Tymoshenko: Funny business at the polls (Ukraine). 24 February 2019 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-47333307 "Two of the candidates in next month's Ukrainian presidential election have the same name - Tymoshenko. And the same initials. And even though the frontrunner to become the next president is a comedian, this is no joke - as the BBC's Jonah Fisher in Kiev explains. "So, Yuriy Volodymyrovich Tymoshenko, on the ballot paper you will be right next to Yulia Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko - one of the frontrunners. Do you see why that's a problem? Ukraine's incumbent president, Petro Poroshenko is facing 43 other candidates. "The widespread suspicion is that Yuriy is what's known as a clone candidate, planted maliciously to steal votes from confused people who really want to vote for the former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko. Yes, the woman with the curled blonde plait." "Some of the other candidacies are just as perplexing. It's hard to see who's going to be voting for Roman Nasirov, the former head of the state fiscal service, currently standing trial for corruption. Or for Volodymyr Petrov, who's under house arrest, accused of creating a sex scandal on Facebook… or indeed for Igor Shevchenko, whose main claim to fame is taking too many blue bobble hats from a stall at Davos." I'm glad our UK politics is so simple!?
SootySport
Well, I'm voting for Yulia, she's much prettier than Yuriy.
DonPeffers
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-48007487 'Ukraine election: Comedian Zelensky wins presidency by landslide. (73% of the vote). Mr Zelensky starred in the long-running satirical drama Servant of the People in which his character accidentally becomes Ukraine's president. He plays a teacher who is elected after his expletive-laden rant about corruption goes viral on social media. He ran under a political party with the same name as his show. Mr Zelensky's entire campaign pushes the idea that's he's very similar to the principled, ethical character people have watched in the fictional series.' So a professional comedian has become Ukraine's President; whereas our leaders are amateur comedians. http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-18-6600_en.htm With this disbursement, the total Macro-Financial Assistance extended to Ukraine by the EU since 2014 will reach €3.3 billion, the largest amount of such assistance directed at any non-EU country. Who's laughing now? UK has contributed to these loans and is expected to contribute more as our £39 BN EU withdrawal divorce bill includes our share of additional loans. If comedians are good at politics how about we have, say, Jimmy Carr as Brexit secretary? The EU negotiations go thus:- Barnier--you must pay £39 BN to leave EU. Carr-- I only pay to enter a club and not to leave it. Barnier-- the bill stands. Carr-- speaks no more words and just does his off-putting laugh whenever Barnier mentions the bill. Our MPs return tomorrow from their Easter hols. so we'll see what they can come up with.
