Company Car Tax getting too high

Recommended Posts

It appears that company car tax is jumping by another 3% of the value in April.  It will be 30% of the value for mine, and that is with a diesel with 110g/km emissions.  It used to be less than 20% of the value for the benefit in kind calculation.

I did some figures on changing to having my own car and was astonished how much better off I would be, and the company would save as well on lease costs, NI contributions and insurance.  I only use my car for social plus 20 mile journeys to the airport most weeks so not doing that many miles per year, current car hasn't even had its first service after 18 months.

Worth looking at if it is an option for you.

Tax Rates

The new emission level of '6d' would drop the percentage by 4% if running a diesel, but no cars are actually available to that standard.  Still too high though.

Dont know the ins and outs as not had a company car for 12 years now, as opted out , but my boss had an XC60 diesel and as a BIk was over £300 a month. That car finished and swopped for a Mitsi PHEV hybrid and it becomes £80 something a month, so quite a saving but is a pointless car and still uses more petrol in cost than the XC60 . But its quite funky driving on battery , until it runs out at 30 miles range ???. Thats quite a saving a month for him and he charges it at work as I  just had a couple of charging points installed.

Over the years I have had many company cars, it all went wrong when they took away the reduction for over 18000 business miles and it started to go up then year on year. Company cars are not a perk anymore but for many getting a high end car is too much of a pull and many still think it is a free car so any punitive taxes on company car users is well supported by the electorate.

I have had Jags, VW and the last car was an XC60 Diesel which I get fuel for as well, that was over £500 per month in tax. I now have a Nissan Navara which is a dual purpose vehicle and that is taxed as a van which is just £100 per month. It drinks diesel takes up the space of two cars and is comfortable and fast enough. Tows 3.5 ton, so ideal for the Westfield.

This is why if you look in any car park there are loads of these about, even Merc have one, essentially a Nissan in a posh frock and others bringing them out.

Exactly the same scenario for me.

I have just ditched my BMW 320d Gran Turismo which was a great car but costing me £325 a month in tax and was due to rise to £350 in April. Swapped to a diesel drinking 3.2 auto Ford Ranger double cab pick up with a hardtop on the back and saved myself over £200 a month

Couple of our senior engineers opted on the 2.2 or 2.3 ? Rangers with double cabs and hard top rear. I hope yours is better Gary , because these were both turds. Rolled around and no corner vision for parking. First gear just rocked them around and no forward motion. Really dreadful. The guys have a choice and both opted on Transit Customs with all the gadgets than the Rangers again.

Mine is loaded, parking sensors all round and rear view camera, so no trouble parking.

I kind of like it, it is no luxury limo but perfectly comfortable and nice to drive. I have whacked 4500 on it in just under 6 weeks

I guess being the later version and an auto its got rid of the shaky gear lever and rolling between gear shifts Gary. The bonnets quite comically huge. You could easily miss cars with it close up :d

Car policy restricts what I can have so no twin cabs or petrol hybrids either with fake emissions figures.

Get a new job is the answer then :d

The hybrids is what our daft government make us use , but the ironic thing is , its rubbish and more environmentally damaging from manufacturing to destruction that a normal car.
