MattPhin Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 Hi Does anyone have an Allegro Inner Steering Column going spare? thanks Matthew
Rusty Nuts Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 Hi I've got this (see pic links below), let me know if it's any good to you? Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3
MattPhin Posted September 30, 2018 Author Posted September 30, 2018 Hi, Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately that seems to be circa twice the length of the one that ‘disappeared’ (courtesy of my son) from my garage.
tolf Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Hi Matt i may have one. What length do you need? ian

Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3 That might be a modified original Allegro column, (wouldn't know if it was an older Escort inner, never seen one on its own), but it's not the current Westfield supplied upper inner column. They've had a female thread for the steering wheel boss for twenty years or so! The length looks a bit off too, but that might be an optical illusion. I'm not sure how well it would fit the outer tube either. The standard upper column is pretty much one relatively smooth bar for a lot of its length. Mind you, looking at your car details, it's a '91? So it's quite possible it's not using the later type column anyway. Could even be an Escort column, at that age. Is the upper columns outer sleeve bolted or welded to the chassis?
MattPhin Posted October 2, 2018 Author Posted October 2, 2018 The column was circa 500mm in length - probably slightly longer but not much. Outer sleeve is bolted to the chassis and looks identical to the drawing in the install manual from around the time. It had a conventional nut for the boss. thanks Matthew
Kevin Pullen Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Matt same set up as mine the column had been cut and welded where it joins the top knuckle in the engine way, think your options are but a standard column and get it cut/welded to suit
MattPhin Posted October 8, 2018 Author Posted October 8, 2018 Thanks for the various replies and PMs. Managed to obtain a suitable column from the rather fine specimen below! 1
