MattN Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 Hi all, I'm looking for some other avenues for the equipment I operate as a surveyor and wondered whether there'd be any demand for performance analysis using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)/ Global Naviation Satellite System (GNSS) tracking. Reports on velocity and orientation data, and track position could be generated from the data for optimisation. I've no prior experience in motorsport so looking for some feedback on whether this would be a service people are interesed in/would pay for. Thanks! Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 Hi Matt, welcome to the WSCC. There's already some well established business with the likes of racetechnology and racelogic who's products will log acceleration, G and position in much the way you describe. Depending on the model they also offer options that would additionally log data from vehicle sensors through OBD or external sensors for steering angle, wheel slip etc. How would the cost of the surveying equiptment compare to these products and what flexability is there for adding additional channels for data logging from external sensors? MattN Posted September 28, 2018 Author Posted September 28, 2018 Hi Mark, I was thinking of offering this as a daily package of equipment hire and operator, should have clarified. Equipment should be fairly easily mounted and calibrated, has inputs for odometer and wheel encoder (it'll accept at least two serial inputs I believe RS242/RS422 but I can check). For what it's worth it's a multi frequency, dual antenna system. I'd be interested to know what people's requirements would be. Quote

Not sure if I’m honest. The thing is, equipment that can measure similar parameters and many more isn’t that uncommon on co petition and track day Westfields anyway. Westfield themselves offer two different brands of standard fit dash, that have data logger and accelerometer/gps based track mapping systems that have performance analysis software suites to go with them. It’s not really the data collection side that holds the average owner back. It’s the expert interpretation of the data itself; understanding what it’s telling you and knowing how to apply that knowledge to learn and improve. Quote
