Popular Post Captain Colonial Posted June 16, 2018 Popular Post Posted June 16, 2018 Out yesterday in town when I saw an elderly lady with a hearing assist dog being very closely followed by a gypsy (a term I don’t use loosely) woman. I didn’t like the look of the gypsy’s attention so I turned and got in behind them. The gypsy woman threw some dust over the top of the elderly woman, making her stop. At that point, the gypsy pulled a device out of her bag and held it against the elderly woman’s handbag - obviously a crude RFID reader trying to steal her card info. In what was probably with hindsight the wrong thing to do, I jumped forward and grabbed the RFID reader out of her hand. Both women understandably cried out, for different reasons. The gypsy then tried to assault me to get it back, but even at my advanced age, I fended her off and started shouting for the police, which made her scurry off like a rat. After I explained what had happened to the elderly woman and encouraged her to buy a RFID blocking purse, I went to the police station, made a statement and gave them the device. No idea how much info the thieving c*** had in it. Last night I ordered a new RFID blocking wallet. I suggest you do the same if you already haven’t done so. You can’t trust banks to refund your money these days. 9 2 2 Quote
Kit Car Electronics Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Wow, well done! Thieves that target the elderly are the worst kind of scum. 2 Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 I have passed this story to my daughter who works for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Obviously this is not directly connected with deafness, but many of their dog recipients are also handicapped in more than one way, and will be seen as vulnerable by these people. Well done Scott. 4 Quote
Jonk179 Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 A big pat on the back to you Scott, too many people just walk on by. As said those who pray on the elderly or vulnerable don't in my opinion deserve a place in our society. It would be interesting to know what info the police were to find on the device. 2 Quote
Quinten Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 What they're doing is trying to initiate a contactless payment. Good on you to stop them! Quote

I do think your right, but they'd need a bank account, and you can't open a bank account without ID, making any payments easily traceable and certainly any transfers from that to other accounts....... I guess some people are just somehow above the law and manage to open bank accounts anonymously Quote
Kingster Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Wouldn’t you need a merchant or business account to take electronic payments? Can’t see how they’d get away with it - but obviously some scrotes seem to know! Quote

Blatman Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Who says they are UK bank accounts? The freedom to use our cards in hundreds of countries is surely a two way street... 1 Quote

Just ‘cause the UK banks make you jump through hoops, doesn’t mean they do everywhere. Quote
