The garage did some tests before they dived in head deep into the engine and the upshot is that what you see in the header tank is rust/residue/crud from not driving it over winter. It's not oil and I'm not losing oil into the coolant after all. However, a leak test revealed some cylinders leaking upto 40%, and that combined with oily plugs (new ones fitted this winter) it seems my engine is now a heavy drinker of the black (the other black) stuff.
