B.RAD Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Howdy good folk Question for you - seen this car advertised as a cobra, with registration but listed as a project. In the listing and on the V5 photo it is registered as a Dutton Phaeton. It is very clearly not a Dutton Phaeton, but could the chassis have been used so it is just a rebody? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F123040678729 If something hooky has gone on with the V5, what might the outcome be of buying the car and then applying to DVLA to have it correctly registered? I'm not in a position to purchase (yet) but have had something like this on my radar for some time, just keen to hear from you wisened folk if this is an 'absolutely avoid' or 'easy fix' situation. Thanks! Quote
Quinten Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 If it was an easy fix, why wouldn't the seller have done it? I reckon you'd have to go full IVA for this to be corrected... 1 Quote
pistonbroke Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Ive know 7 type cars built with dutton v5's registered as duttons when they've looked more like robin hoods , before IVA came in though Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 There's a slim chance he used the Dutton chassis but I doubt it since the listing describes the car as having Granada suspension. It looks like you're buying a cobra that will need an IVA test once complete and a V5 for another car that probably no longer exists. 1 Quote
Alan France Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 I built a Dutton Phaeton in the late 70s and a Dax Cobra, doesn’t look like either, especially the Dutton. Could it be a Pilgrim? Best to walk away in my opinion. Quote
B.RAD Posted March 26, 2018 Author Posted March 26, 2018 So many things about that ad scream walk away - three manufacturers listed in the heading (AK, Hawk, Dax) and Viper mentioned in the heading as well. Such limited detail on what the car actually is. And at £3500 already after being listed for less than a day - it's quickly losing its bargain status. I've asked the seller some basic questions, I'll judge by the reply! Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 It's an absolute crying shame that a lot of old Duttons and probably others too, that are in need of a bit of work to get road worthy again are being hoovered up for their V5's. Sadly, that's all that usually remains of the original In most cases, it's deliberate and cynical ringing by any other name, solely to bypass IVA etc. (We are not talking the old pre SVA incorrectly registered vehicles here). Best case if you got properly caught would be having to get the vehicle IVA'd. 1 Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Don't know what kit it is, doesn't look like a Sumo in the engine bay, or at least, not the ones I've seen. Quote

It is either a Classic Replica or a Cobretti Its the same/very similar to the one I am building, which is why it is one of the above two. Classic Replica's no longer exist and Cobretti now have the rights/jigs 1 Quote
