Pinto Boy Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 Following a couple of recent threads I'm be thinking about getting an RAC roll bar. I know that my head should be inside a "safety zone" created by the top of the bar and..... what? Is it the top of the nose cone? Also the top of the windscreen gets in my vision a little, has anyone fitted a taller screen or raised it up a little? I currently bob around to see through blind spot but if I fit a 4pt harness this might become a little difficult Quote
oioi Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 top of the nose cone. picture your car upside down with you dangling in it - is your head on the ground and now mush? Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 Email sent to Westfield Could you tell me how tall the RAC roll bar is from the mounting point to the top of the roll bar please. I need to know if my head will be low enough with the seats that I have fitted. Reply from Westfield The RAC roll bar is 410mm from its base to the top.Regards Gavin Reply from Westfield This may also help Quote
Blatman Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 top of the nose cone. So nearly right........ The sturdiest object that won't give way is the either the engine (think about it......) or the top of the front part of the chassis. Draw an imaginary line from the top of the roll bar down to around that area, and see what hits first. If your head is above this line, then you'll be in trouble in an inversion. You should also leave some room for movement, 'cos even FIA harnesses will stretch a bit in an incident. They're supposed to, but the upshot is the same......... Quote
Pinto Boy Posted November 25, 2003 Author Posted November 25, 2003 Thanks Matt, though I'm not sure if this will be tall enough for me, I'm 6'3". Does anyone have views on the strength of welded hoops on top of the roll bar? Quote
SteveF Posted November 26, 2003 Posted November 26, 2003 I had a similar problem of looking through the top frame of the windscreen - I found a 'tall screen' - about 2" taller than the standard - which works great. I understand it was made by Westfield - but I got mine 2nd hand (off the BBS) for about £100. Other solutions I considered before I found the screen - as my seats are on runners, and quite highly padded - are to take the seat off the runners - good for about 2", or get a fiberglass / CF seat which will get you down even lower Steve Quote
