Clutch sliping and engine oil leak.

Evening all, I’m looking for some advice please. I competed my build of a fw special addition back in August and got it on the road for September. It was a complete new kit all Westfield supplied parts. I’ve got two issues.

Firstly I’ve got a bad oil leak and the oil is dripping down and out of the bell housing. I’ve spoken to mark who has advised me to check the sump bolts as it could be leaking from the rear of the sump. Cant say I’m pleased about having to work on one of the very few areas the factory put together. The other is the clutch is slipping quite badly. I originally though this was down to the oil but Mark assured me this wouldn’t be the case. I’ve tried giving my self more free play on the clutch and have even used a shorter stop bolt for the clutch peddle to give me more travel but it still slips. If I loosen it off any more I can’t get it to gear.

Has anyone had a issues like the above problems.

Thanks for your time

regards

Will

First of all your car looks fantastic.

if Westfield supplied the engine and gearbox complete and fitted together then this needs to go back to them to fix the oil leak. As for the Clutch the two are quite possibly related. Oil is very good at reducing friction which the clutch relies on to work properly.

It sounds like you have adjusted the clutch off enough to rule out a tight cable. Unfortunately you will have to persist with Mark and join the que as it seems a few are going back at the moment.

at least it’s  winter and the best time to get it repaired.

good luck. John

The sump is bolted with sealant. If the bolts have come loose, it may have split the sealant. It is rare , as its a flat surface , so all the sump would be loose and the sealant is strong stuff. The only cure for  this is to remove the sump, clean up and reseal. It may not be the sump, it could also be the the crankshaft oil seal or a gearbox seal. Whichever , as John says, if you bought the engine and box as one, then Westfield should deal with the issue. But it is worth just double checking rocker covers etc, as a leak could run down the back of the block, but as a whole should be a warranty issue. Yes, the clutch slip is probably linked to this issue too.

Not that issue specifically, but I’ve had a rear main engine oil seal leak that resulted in a slipping clutch.
