Some debate on ecoboost oil. 5w20 or 5w30 are both listed by ford as suitable. 5w20 can reduce the engine noise apparently as it's thinner. I went with the ford brand 5w30 as the guy in parts said that's all they used in the workshop as the 5w20 was 3x the price. Good price that listed above. Quote
Thrustyjust Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Do you have any rattles , like a timing chain noise, as my mates ST 250 has an unusual tinkling sound , which the garage dont know what it is and there are youtube videos of the noise and people saying they were told it was normal. Quote
Steve (sdh2903) Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Sure it's not the high pressure fuel pump? It's mounted on the opposite end of the cam gear to the timing chain. That does make a ticking noise that I first thought could be timing chain related. There is a ford bulletin for the focus st to use 5w20 for certain years but 5w30 is still fine to use. I've not been able to track it down to see why they reccomend it and for what reason. Mine seems happy enough on 5w30. Quote
Thrustyjust Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 I dont know. i have had my head under the bonnet and sounds more the drivers side, but it has the ST engine cover over it. He bought it a few weeks ago from Ford as a 20k used car. They changed the oil after he took it back, so not sure on if they changed the viscosity , as the old oil was in it for 100 miles. Seems a bit odd ? I'll have to listen out for the fuel pump at the weekend when I see him and the car. Quote
Steve (sdh2903) Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Pop the cover off and have a look to make sure that the foam cover is fitted over the pump like below. It quietens it down a fair bit. A ticking noise from the pump (providing not excessive) is considered normal. 1 Quote
Thrustyjust Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Cheers Steve, mission rattle this weekend then. Quote
