How did we allow common sense to die..?

A post created to allow me and Dave to moan about generational responsibility...

On the "Made me chuckle" thread, Dave made this comment about a rather delusional young chap "obviously not stupid, just let down, I suppose. Never really taught how to think or reason something through. It causes me pain, as I genuinely feel it's "us" that have allowed the drift towards this to continue"

I do have to agree, with certain medical exceptions when folk are born with a condition I tend to believe in "Nurture more than Nature" so in most cases we have created the environment for folk to grow up with zero common sense.

I'm going to do my usual PC bashing and say the rot started in education when WMH (Well Meaning Hippies) got traction on the idea that no child was better or worse at something than any other child so...

• Competitive sports were stopped - because nobody could lose
• There was never a stupid thought or question - because some kids just thought a different way to others
• No discipline was enforced - because you had to allow kids to express themselves (and Simpson stabbing Jenkins with a compass was a form of creative expression)

If you subscribe to the above, when did it start? I was at school in the 70's through 80's and I still remember all of the above - getting whacked with a ruler (steel one in metal work), being stupid and never getting picked for any team - and it never did me any hhhhaahhharm [left eye twitching madly]

Not having kids, I have no idea when it all went fluffy and 'wrong'

But perhaps there is some recognition that its finally gone too far?

The problem with common sense, is that arrogance always wins, whilst common sense gets the sack to avoid an "I told you so". But hey that's enough of my career history

The education system is now modelled around creating an army of mindless zombies who don't dare question authority, taught that the less you question the status-quo and the more mediocre you are, the greater your chances in life............... Sadly it's true, because in the real world middle management only promote people who don't pose a threat, so being mediocre is actually a bonus.

Common sense hasn't gone anywhere, you're just much more exposed to morons than you used to be. It's a connected world, which although it has lots of benefits also means you can't help but be connected to people you wouldn't choose to socialise with.

I worked in customer services 15 years ago, pre-smartphone, pre-facebook etc and I can assure you that common sense was in deep absence then too.
