chriss1455 Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 With me seriously looking into joining the speed series next year (as mentioned in bunje's thread) im interested to know what class i will be in and wether ot not i would need to do any modifications to my car for this. Car is a 2004 seiw 2.0 duratec Uprated cams (if that matters) SPC transport type 9 Full playskool cage Running on 888's I understand that i will need an approved suit and hat also. Is there a need for racing boots? Also that i will need to get an msa national b license I have read the beginners guide but tbh its all a little to mich info for me to take in. So will have to read it over a period of time to get my head around it properly. Thanks in advance Quote
Kingster Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Think the r888's are not allowed. R1Rs are ok though (I think!) Not decided yet if I'll be joining you but heck I have a trailer and the wife was wondering why I wasn't doing sprints last year, so the biggest hurdle is out of the way (apart from a lack of talent that is!) Terry Everall Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 I believe its only the super soft R888 that is a list 1C tyre Quote
chriss1455 Posted July 14, 2017 Author Posted July 14, 2017 Ok so of i change my tyres to R1Rs woukd that then be ok? Quote
Kingster Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Terry knows way more than me when it comes to this sprinting malarkey mate so just ignore me! Quote
Matthew Haynes Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 R888's are fine in SG compound and GG compound (the letters are clearly shown on the side wall). Only the very rare GGG compound is not acceptable in road going. Quote
chriss1455 Posted July 14, 2017 Author Posted July 14, 2017 Just now, Matthew Haynes said: R888's are fine in SG compound and GG compound (the letters are clearly shown on the side wall). chriss1455 Posted July 14, 2017 Author Posted July 14, 2017 888s are listed in 1B not entirely sure what that means in regards to a class i be in? Quote
Matthew Haynes Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 The basics are: Suit, gloves and helmet. See the blue book. You don't need boots or nomex underwear in road going (although many choose to). Car needs beam breaker, yellow tape on negative of battery, and to be road worthy. Full cage is great, but it needs an FIA sticker, or needs to conform to blue book. Many older cages do not comply. My cage is 2 years old but will check for an fia sticker. As for the battery, i have it located in the passenger's footwell, with you saying about the yellow tape on negative cable will i then have to move the battery or make an access hatch in the scuttle panel for this? Beam breaker at front of car. Dimensions are in blue book. Just put yellow tape on the lead. If you have a FIA battery cut off switch put a sticker next to it and you will be good! No need for hatches etc. 1 Quote

If the cage was from playskool, it was probably made by caged, and is probably OK. If there is no sticker check with Luke at playskool to sort it 1 Quote
XTR2Turbo Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 the whole speed series classes and MSA licensing does look a bit daunting to a newcomer but the good news is that it really is not that bad once you get used to it and there is lots of help. The WSCC speed series is probably the must supportive and friendly club series that exists. Basically if you have a normal road going westfield you have 99% of what you need. There are some minor things like labelling tow point and ignition etc that have been mentioned above that you can sort easily. The main change that has come in recently is ROPS or in plain English roll over protection. You must have either the MSA (not RAC) roll hoop with welded rear stays for example as supplied by the factory and made by Caged or supplied by Playskool or you must have a cage. Again the factory via caged and playschool supply homologated cages. If you go a different route you need to check carefully that it meets the spec set out in the MSA blue book. Clothing is easy ... correct spec overalls, helmet and gloves. Shoes don't matter If in a higher class (1C super soft tyres or sequential box . also bike engine ) you will need HANS MSA entry is easy you just need a non race B licence that you apply for online around November. I would pick a first event where you know there will be a few club members entered to help you on the day with any questions etc. David 4 Quote
