Thrustyjust Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 I wrapped my crossflow manifold many moons ago to try and cut down under bonnet temps and to stop me burning myself and melting fleeces !! Worked fine, but I fitted it and then painted with high temp paint to stop it disintegrating over time. 1 Quote

Don't know if its linked but when lifting my throttle the exhaust pop has increased massively. I like the sound but not sure on the damage its causing.... never did it as much without the wrap? Quote

CraigHew Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 I've read about a couple of instances where a wrapped exhaust has failed at a joint outside the wrapped area, presumably from more heat being transferred further through the pipework than would normally be the case. I think the ceramic coating looks a lot lot nicer although it will cost a fair bit more. 1 Quote

It was two years ago, £220 for 4 part BEC manifold and the system That was just the external coating,you can get the inside done too. The colour choice wasn't massive,but few greys/silver,then couple of blacks Quote

Well does it damage an exhaust or not ? As a new member to the site looking for information I'm amazed that after so many views and a few posts no-one has picked up on this and answered the question . it seems that it's carried on to a pros and cons debate to wrapping and even ceramic coating and I've done this and that The owner of a car that is popping like a good un and is maybe a bit worried whether it is doing damage is none the wiser as those in the know have done nothing to reassure . I wouldnt get so worried about exhausts popping, so keep your hair on !! Not everyone knows answers and are happy to read information by others and 300 people reading this thread is pretty minimal for the members here . It does depend on many factors on why an exhaust pops. usually caused by heat and unburnt fuel igniting in the system. If the engine is mapped in certain ways or even camshaft overlap is causing unburnt fuel to be cycled into the exhaust and exhaust heat causes igniton and causes pops. Using a cat , can keep the silencer cleaner from fuel deposits and so reduce the popping. By using ceramic coating or heat tape, can cause the heat to travel further from the head and manifold and into the silencer, thus causing an area to ignite and cause popping. As for damage, yes it can cause silencers to open up, but you'd have to have some really bad tuning to create that issue. 3 Quote
