jonjh1964 Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 I've now finished salvaging parts from my donor car and it's ready the local scrap yard. The DVLA website isn't clear on whether I need to get a Certificate of Destruction or keep the V5C for the registration of the kit and the scrap yard have said that they can't issue a CofD retrospectively. What have members who've recently built a car with a donor done? Quote
Dommo Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 I cut out the VIN plates (not sure if that was necessary) and sent the shell for scrap (as scrap metal, not a scrap car). I think the V5 was used in the registration process. 1 Quote
corsechris Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 That's my understanding too. I had to scrap 2 cars for my current project. Kept chassis numbers from both, disposed of the rest, got them both on SORN, took LOTS of pictures of the scrapping process. 1 Quote
Stuart Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 Don't the regulations say that if you scrap the car yourself you don't need a CoD? Quote
Rab (bombero) Reid Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 2 minutes ago, Stuart said: Don't the regulations say that if you scrap the car yourself you don't need a CoD? But he'll technically not be 'scrapping' the car by keeping the VIN plates and SORNing the vehicle. He'll only be selling the shell as scrap metal not a scrap car. Quote
jonjh1964 Posted May 18, 2017 Author Posted May 18, 2017 Thanks for the responses, the car is currently SORN'd, I've removed the VIN plate and have lots of photos of the donor part removal. I'll now sell the remainder as scrap metal taking some photos of it in the yard and retain the V5C for registration of the kit once it's built. Quote
Simon Marks - North Oxfordshire AO Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Hi, Jon, I did the same as described except I passed my shell on (without its VIN plate - pop riveted on to an old car like our Spridgets) to resurrect a rustier car up in Yorkshire. Pictures taken and no problems with registration with the V5C. I included the photograph below in my IVA build photographs file. Simon 1 Quote
corsechris Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 I know. Mind you, it was properly rotten so I didn't feel too bad but I have to say, the engineering in it was interesting and impressive how they added lightness throughout. Also impressed how the engine internals looked perfect after 130000miles. 1 Quote
