The engine has run with just the ram pipes ever since I bought it approx three years ago, I only put the Ramair filters on recently because I was concerned that stones or other objects may get into the engine via the pipes. The engine definately runs better without the foam filters, I may get some mesh filters similar to tea strainers (remember them).  I dont see the point of engines with polished alloy trumpets covered with foam filters.
