Kingster Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Well that's just great. All of my old links to my Dropbox images are gone thanks to the twonks changing the way the "public" folder works. Basically it's no longer public! Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Picassa has done a similar broken link thing to me, and that was supposed to be an image hosting service. Quote
Trevor Little (Trevturtle) - Treasurer Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 glad it's not just me with dropbox... it's been an unruly little chap the past few days Quote
Kingster Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 I used to be a huge fan but this has really cheesed me off. Quote
Andrew Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 I've been using photobucket up until a few months back, when they decided I'd used up my allowance and they now want a payment ( .. or is it payments?) to up my capacity. I've resisted so far, but having lost a load of my photos due to a dying hard drive, the only way I'll see some of them again is to subscribe. Quote

Subscribe for a short time to get them back, then BIN them. I never trust these sites, they are always trying to make money some how or other off you. Quote
Lawrie Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 So this is the Cloud that they're trying to sell us. Keep in all on your own PC and back up to an external drive. Quote
corsechris Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Personally I'd never trust anything important to me to a cloud based service. None of them offer any sort of guarantee worth a fig. Two backups. Physically separated and a tried and tested(!) restore route. It's fine having loads of backups but do make sure you can actually use them if the worst happens. Periodic test restores are vital. Kingster Posted March 18, 2017 Author Posted March 18, 2017 For my work comp I have files on the computer that are backed up every hour incrementally to en external drive. I also clone the entire computer every week to another drive. I always have one of these off site over night. The web server gets backed up automatically every night. Then I have a cloud repository for the code I use on each project that gets incrementally backed up every time I save a change and can roll back or swap to development code (look up Github or BitBucket). Still hate Dropbox for dropping me in it though! Quote
Kingster Posted March 18, 2017 Author Posted March 18, 2017 The thing with Dropbox is not that the files are gone - they are still there. But they changed the link to the files so that they are no longer available. So if I want to use them I have to relink each one - one at a time. Hate them Quote
Andrew Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 My Photobucket linked pics are still viewable in various threads.. I just cant access my bucket! I'm presuming it's my PC ip that's blocked.. can anyone else view my bucket? http://s133.photobucket.com/user/dixonandrew/library/?sort=3&page=1 Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 Yes Andrew, I can see them on your link. Quote
