How to sell car?

Morning folks,

In a short while I will be putting the memsahib's trusty Honda Civic up for sale as her new car will be arriving.  Due to company cars, kids coming of driving age and p/x I haven't sold a car privately for more than 20 years, so would appreciate any tips on the best way to sell a c £3k car and the safest way to be paid for it.

I've done it without any problems on Ebay but insist on cash on collection, you need a well written advert, correct spelling and grammar, with plenty of details and pictures.

Is it 10% of the final sale for the ebay fees though? Thats a heck of a lot on a £3k car.

I'd go Autotrader, Pistonheads, WSCC and give me first refusal, my sister is looking for a Civic.

No it is either £10 or £15 insertion fee, depending on the category, and 1% of final figure with a maximum of £35 so £50 or slightly less in total.

Pistonheads pretty good and a third of Autotrader cost last time I used them.

If cash payment insist on paying into bank before releasing car as many counterfeit bank notes about (£50 notes the most likely to be fake). If cheque payment then it must clear thru your bank account before car released etc.

If buyer wants to do a bank transfer I would avoid this for two reasons; firstly if the transaction was done fraudulently using someone else's account then the transfer could be reversed and secondly I would not want a stranger to have my name ,address and bank account no. with sort code.

Write out two receipts showing car details/ reg no./sale price/date plus name and address details of you and buyer--also stating "sold as seen". You both sign each copy under name and retain one each.

Send completed sale/transfer part of V5 to DVLA. Unexpired road tax refund cheque posted to you by DVLA and buyer needs to buy new road tax online before driving off.

Should you ask potential buyer to prove I.D. and insured for your car before he drives it (in case the worst happens)?

Be careful with cash on collection there are some very clever con men about , read this.

A vehicle was advertised on a forum for £5 K , a number of people thought it was too much, after a couple of weeks someone makes contact with the seller and makes arrangements to view. Purchaser turns up with a trailer looks at the vehicle says he will have it for the asking price and offers a cheque, seller declines a cheque saying ' I don't know you so I am not prepared to accept a  cheque ' .

Purchaser asks if there is a local bank to which seller advises there is , Purchaser asks seller to take him to the bank so he doesn't have to take his vehicle and trailer to the High Street, seller duly obliges runs him to bank and waits outside ,after approx. 10 minutes purchaser comes out of bank with an envelope with £10 K in explaining he has more business to do on the way home.

Money duly counted out , vehicle loaded onto trailer and purchaser drives away everyone happy !

Approximately 1 hour later seller visits  same bank to pay in the £5 K , cashier checks the money and refuses it  as forged notes , seller says it can't be as it was drawn out approximately 1 hour ago .

All cashiers checked no withdrawal of £10 K that morning ( small branch) , it appears conman went into bank with the envelope hidden on his person , number plate on collection vehicle was false.

Seller no cash and no vintage agricultural vehicle.

 

Perhaps cash isn't always best !!

Thanks all some good info.  So the only way to be safe is to take the money to the bank before releasing the car???  Seems a bit OTT.

Russ H I just tried to PM you but says you can't take messages so perhaps your inbox is full?  It's a 57 reg 1.8 Sport, owned since new with genuine 59k miles on it.  Never been pranged.  FSH, MoT til October, available 17/3.  Cars with that mileage are over £3k on Autotrader, but I'd take £2.5k for it for a hassle free sale.  If you're interested then PM me your email address and I'll send you some more details and pics.

We have just sold my wife's cat to We Buy Any Car. I was surprised by how easy and the price we got was fair. Yes we could have got £2-300 more private but we had a time issue and the lack of being dicked about was worth it.

There was also We Want Any Car and Evans Halshaw who all wanted to buy it. Just go on line and stick your reg in, we were accurate in description and on inspection they only chipped £100 down from the offer on line.

He told me they but 50-75 cars each day cash was transferred same day

I've also sold two cars to WBAC and I was happy with the price I got. It saves all the dicking around and being messed about by prospective buyers. I probably could have got 3-400 quid more but I prefer the simplicity of WBAC.
